2 BACKGROUND (Major Problems) – High population growth – National policy previously economic growth oriented – Forestry policy previously timber production oriented – Lacking awareness of the forest functions from other sectors (down stream sectors) and community 1

3 FOREST LAND USE Total area of the Indonesian Tropical Forests based on Forest Land Use by Consensus (TGHK, 1994) : 2

4 ESTIMATED RATE OF DEFORESTATION  1.6 MILLION HECTARES per year ( /1998)* * - RePPProt 1985 and MoFEC 1997/1998 Preliminary results (average from Kalimantan, Sumatera, Sulawesi, and Irian Jaya) -Most of deforestation has occurred on the lowland area. 3

9 NEW POLICIES – Minimize natural forests conversion – Balance between economy, ecology, and social aspects of forestry development – New approach on setting up the National Forest Program through public participation (stakeholders) – Intensify campaign on multi-function of forests – Improve the quality / quantity of forests (LOA, ex fire areas, new plantation, reforestation) 8
