3 About half of the Jews that live in India live in Manipur and Mizoram and a quarter live in the city of Mumbai. India had a Jewish population of about 30,000. Since then about 20,000 have emigrated to Israel and several thousand elsewhere, now a community of seven to eight thousand Jews live in India according to the official estimation. 4 About the Jews in India There were five tribes that lived in India(some lived at different times) Did you know that Judaism was one of the first foreign religions to arrive in India in recorded history. The Jewish population in India is hard to estimate since each Jewish community is distinct with different origins; some arrived during the time of the Kingdom of Judah, others are seen by some as descendants of Israel's mythical Ten Lost Tribe.

6 A short history of the Jews in India. The history of the Bene Israel in India still remain a mystery. They lived mainly in Western India and around Mumbai. This community of Indian Jews was discovered in the 18th century, but their families stretched back more than 2,000 years before that event. According to legend, the group shipwrecked near the Maldives islands in the Indian ocean and seven men and seven women survived. These men and women became the first Bene Israel in India and the others descended from them. When they were discovered in the 18th century, the Bene Israel did not refer to themselves as Jews but they practiced circumcision, observed Jewish dietary laws and rested on the Sabbath.

7 A short history of the Jews in India. Cochin Jews,( also called Malabar Jews or Malabar Yehudan) and Yuda Mappila, are the oldest group of Jews in India, with families claimed to date to the time of King Solomon, though historical dates date from the fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE. Historically, they lived in the Kingdom of Cochin in South India, which is now part of the state of Kerala. The community was divided into White Jews (Paradesi Jews) and Black Jews (Malabari), both of which spoke Judeo-Malayalam, a dialect of Malayalam. The vast majority of Cochin Jews emigrated to Israel after its formation, the number remaining in Kerala itself is minuscule, and the community faces extinction there. A family of cochin Jews.

8 Unfortunately I could not find any pieces of music of the Jews of India but here is some info on it. For many centuries, Cochin Jewish women have been singing Jewish songs, both in Hebrew and in the Malayalam language of Kerala, their ancient homeland on the tropical southwest coast of India. Now that almost all of them are living in Israel, Cochini women and men continue to share in singing their traditional Hebrew songs. Though Malayalam Jewish songs have always belonged to the women, men in their community often heard them performed in Kerala and are encouraging a revival of their performance by Cochini women in Israel today.
