4 Why is it important?  Understand how people in different parts of the world live  Learn how a settlement connects to its surrounding environment  Understand how people and goods move between places  Understand social problems about where people live and how they use land

5 Different Types of Settlements  Size  Shape  Appearance  Size: Population Density  Number of people that live in a certain area  Can be written as a ratio of # of people / km 2

6 Hamlet  A small group of houses Oberwil in Waldkirch, St. Gallen, Switzerland Cape Dorset aka Kinngait, on Dorset Island, near the southern tip of Baffin Island, Nunavut

7 Village  A small community  A few hundred people to a few thousand Bisley, Gloucestershire, England typical Canela village in Brazil

8 Town  A settlement bigger than a village but smaller than a city Çeşme, Turkey Orangeville, Ontario

9 City  A large and permanent settlement Sydney, Australia Brampton, Ontario

10 Metropolis  A city with over a million inhabitants Shanghai, China Population: 13,831,900 Mumbai, India Population: 13,830,884 Karachi, Pakistan population: 12,991,000

11 Shape & Appearance of Settlements  Population Distribution:  The patterns of where people live  3 types:  Linear : a small settlement built in a straight or wavy pattern  Low density  Found along roads, railways, rivers/lakes, and along long narrow valleys

12  Scattered: (dispersed)  a rural settlement where houses are built away from each other  Eg. Farms  The houses may have a barn or other buildings attached, but they are far away from their neoghbours

13  Clustered:  People live very close together  High density  Built around a core expanding outward and/or upward
