Since 2000 Iowa has lost 29% of their domestic violence and sexual assault programs. 9 programs have closed or merged.

In October, the Iowa Attorney General announced a 24% cut in federal & state funds for victims services – beginning July 1, 2013.

This doesn’t include cuts that will come from sequestration. Senator Tom Harkin has introduced a bill on the federal level that would protect victim funding from sequestration.

Victims are struggling… In response to these funding cuts, the Attorney General’s Office is recommending regionalization of victim services.

DVIP has the only dedicated domestic violence shelter in a 13 county area, including Iowa City, Coralville, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Cedar Falls. What do you say when the shelter is full? Our requests for shelter have increased 37% in the past three years.

Iowa currently funds 27 domestic violence and sexual assault programs. In July, Iowa will fund per region: 1-2 Domestic Violence Shelters 1 Domestic Violence Comprehensive Services Program 1 Sexual Assault Program Only 18 Programs Will Be Funded. Region 6 will lose at least 80 of our 166 shelter beds.

Safety & Dignity… …a promise we must keep.
