2 By the end of this workshop, you will be able to: import references into your RefWorks account by using import filters, manual input, RSS Feeds; capture bibliographic data from a Webpage; create in-text citations and reference lists using Write-N-Cite; share your references.

3 Import by Copy-and-Paste -- Multiple Records from Library Catalogue (1) 3 1. Search Library Catalogue by keywords / subject / author / title, etc. 2. Save multiple records on results list or Mark individual records on single record display 3. Click Marked List button to view previously saved / marked records 4. Choose MARC Format and Output to Screen 5. Click Submit button 6. Ctrl-A to select all; Ctrl-C to copy to clipboard

4 Import by Copy-and-Paste -- Multiple Records from Library Catalogue (2) 4 7. Now Switch to the RefWorks Session (or open a new window and login to RefWorks) 8. Select References  Import 9. Select From Text 10. Select Import Filter/Data Source = MARC Format 11. Select Database = All MARC Formats 12. Paste (Ctrl-V) the clipboard contents to the input area below 13. Click Import

10 Input Records Manually 1. At RefWorks Menu  References  Add New or Select the New Reference button 2. Choose the desired output format in Fields used by (e.g. APA style) 3. Select Reference Type (e.g. Web Page, Journal Article, Book Whole, etc.) 4. Type in the citation information (The fields that you need to fill in will depend on the output style and reference type you select.) 5. You can also add the reference to a folder, attach a related file, add more information in additional fields 6. Click “Save Reference” 10

11 Input Records Manually: Author format Surname (last name) first, followed by a comma, space and the first name(or first initial follow by a period) Each author name must be separated by a semi- colon. E.g. Clinton, Bill; Smith, John D. 11

12 Attachments You can attach files associated with the bibliographic information stored in RefWorks (PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, JPEG, PNG, GIF and more)

16 Hands-on Exercise Create a new reference for the following book:

17 Import References from RSS Feeds Locate the RSS Feed you would like to include. E.g. Right mouse click on the RSS Feed icon or link and select “Copy” to copy the URL. Login to your RefWorks account. Select “RSS Feeds” from the Search Menu. Paste the URL in the box next to RSS Feed URL by right clicking in the box, or using CTRL V and click the "Add RSS Feed' button. Confirm the addition of the RSS Feed by clicking "OK". You feed results will be displayed in a new window. Select the references you want to import into your RefWorks account and Click "Import“.

18 Hands-on Exercise Add the BBC Health RSS feed ( ) to your Refworks accounthttp://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/health/rss.xml Then select 3 – 6 new items from the BBC Health RSS feed and import to your Refworks account.

19 Add Web Pages to RefWorks -- RefGrab-It (1) RefGrab-It is a plug-in to be installed to your web browser. It helps to gather web page information to RefWorks. It’s available under Tools after you login to RefWorks Installation and instructions:  Using_RefGrab-It_to_Capture_Web_Page_Data.htm Using_RefGrab-It_to_Capture_Web_Page_Data.htm 19

20 1. Select RefGrab-It within RefWorks under the Tools pull-down menu. 2. Right click on RefGrab-It to bookmark link. 3. Click on Bookmark This Link. 20 Add Web Pages to RefWorks -- RefGrab-It (2)

21 Add Web Pages to RefWorks -- RefGrab-It (3) 21 To cite a particular web page, first open it in the web browser and then click the RefGrab-It link. A separate window will pop up. Select the reference and click the Import To RefWorks button to transfer the information to RefWorks. e.g.

22 Create In-Text Citations -- Write-N-Cite 22 Write-N-Cite is a tool that allows you to run Refworks in your MS Word. With this tool you can generate in-text citations and bibliographies in MS Word documents. You need to download and install the tool on your computer in order to use it. To download Write-N-Cite: 1. Login to Refworks 2. Select Write-N-Cite from the Tools menu in RefWorks 3. Click the Download now button for the version of Write-N-Cite you wish to install 4. Save the.exe file to your computer 5. Optional: Before leaving the download page please copy your Login Code onto your clipboard, using the instructions on the left hand side of the page. This will enable you to easily log in to Write-N-Cite without needing your RefWorks credentials or on campus access For detailed instructions, please refer to RefWorks 2.0 GuideRefWorks 2.0 Guide
