EBSCO Discovery Service Tutorial

Welcome to the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) tutorial. EDS provides you with access to your institutions entire collection via a single, customizable entry point. In this tutorial, we will look at performing a basic keyword search and review the unique features available within EDS. We will also review EBSCOhost Integrated Search features when used in conjunction with EDS. Because the EDS interface is customizable by administrators, your searching experience may vary from this demonstration.

Well begin by conducting a search for Global Warming from the Basic Search screen. To reveal all of the available search modes, limiters, and expanders, click the Search Options link.

In the Search Options, there are several ways to refine your search. Check the Catalog Only limiter to limit results to only those items available from your institutions catalog. The Available in Library Collection limiter restricts results to those items whose full text is available online (via EBSCOhost full text databases, e-journals, institutional repositories, etc.) or content physically available in your library.

The Location limiter allows you to limit your results to items that are available from a specified location within your institution. Select your desired limiters and click Search.

The result list is displayed. If available, select an article to read by clicking on the full text link. You can view the Detailed Record by clicking the article title, or view a brief version of the record by holding your mouse over the preview icon. Results may also include real-time information on the location of an item from your institutions catalog.

There are several ways to refine your search from the Result List. Apply limiters under Refine your results or select subject clusters, all found in the left column. You can also refine results by selecting a content provider, using the Content Provider cluster. Click the Show More link when displayed to view all available options.

When refining your search results using limiters, source types, and clusters, each item is added to the Breadbox found at the top of the left-hand column. Clicking on a hyperlinked subject term within the Breadbox executes a search for that term only. Clicking on the icon removes the term from the Breadbox and refreshes your search results.

The Detailed Record includes an articles citation information and links to full text, when available. You can print, , save, cite or export a single result using the tools in the right column of the Detailed Record. You can also access the catalog record and view holdings information in the left column, when an item is available from your institutions catalog.

If EBSCOhost Integrated Search is included with your institutions Discovery Service subscription, the Integrated Search panel appears on the right.

After your initial search, the result list defaults to showing only items from your institutions Discovery Service database. The Integrated Search panel displays the resources available to you. If a resource contains a blue hyperlink, results are available for your query. If a resource name is grayed out, no results were available for your query. To view more information about a resource, hold your pointer over the Source Description icon. If you would like to view results from other resources, mark the check boxes for multiple resources and click the Update button found at the bottom of the Integrated Search panel. Expand the panel to view all available resources by clicking the Show All link.

You can filter your result list to view only results from a specific resource by clicking on the resource description when it is hyperlinked. When full text is available from an external resource, the Retrieve Full Text link appears with the results.

To view Integrated Search details outlining where your results are coming from, hover your pointer over the Details icon above the Integrated Search panel. The first table highlights results available from EBSCO Discovery Service and the retrieval time for the search. The second table highlights results information from all other resources.

When you add Discovery Service results to the folder, they are available in the Articles area. Results from Integrated Search resources are stored in the Other Content Sources area.

EBSCO Discovery Service also includes the Advanced Search screen. Guided Style searching allows you to simultaneously search for different terms in varying article citation fields. Enter your search terms in the Find fields and select the desired fields to search from the corresponding drop-down lists. Click Search to view the result list.

At any time during your session, you can click the Help link to view the complete online Help system.
