1 Setting Out a Stair String Click mouse to bring in each point or item. M. S. Martin February 2008

2 First look at the example calculations Determine suitable rise & going of step to construct a closed riser timber staircase given the following. Rise of flight = 1.050m Going of flight = 1.450m Assume rise of = 170mm No. Risers = 1.050.170 = 6.176 say 6 Height of Rise = 1.050 6 = 0.175 say 175mm No. of Goings = 5 (one less) Length of going = 1.450 5 = 0.290 Check for easy going 2R + G = 550 to 700 (2 x 175) + 290 = 640mm OK

3 Setting Out String Remember key sizes – Rise 175mm & Going 290mm 1) Draw in Margin line, 30 to 40mm from top edge of string 2) Set up the steel square with the rise & going dimensions on the margin line 175290 3) Repeat the process, marking the lines as you go until you have the required rise number, in this case = 6 4) You now have the top line for your steps, click mouse to show their position This is the bottom landing or ground line Here is the top landing or top floor
