Chp 3-1 Latitude and Longitude
The earth is divided into lots of lines called latitude and longitude. The lines measure distances in degrees. Longitude Latitude ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy created a grid system and listed the coordinates for places throughout the known world in his book Geography. But it wasn't until the middle ages that the latitude and longitude system was developed

Latitude and Longitude
Latitude lines run side to side. Has units in North and South direction maximum of 90 degrees North South Has 180 degrees total (90 north and 90 south)

Latitude and Longitude
Longitude lines run up and down. Responsible for the 24 hour time zone Has units in East and West direction West East Has 360 degrees total (180 east and 180 west)

Writing Geographical Coordinate
Write the latitude line coordinate first (north and south) Then write the longitude line after (west and east)

1. 60°S, 100°W = ? 3. 2. 40°N, 120°W = ? 4. North South West East 4 3
Which ocean? 3. 40S, 40E Which continent? N, 100W Talk about Geocaching West East 1. 60°S, 100°W = ? 3. 2. 40°N, 120°W = ? 4.

Where is 0 degree? The equator is 0 degree latitude. Equator

Where is 0 degree? The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude. This imaginary line runs through several countries.

Great Circles Any circle that divides the globe into halves.
The equator is the only line of latitude that is a great circle.
