Van Buren selected by Jackson He was from New York Served as Vice president under Andrew Jackson Jackson’s chose him as his successor in 1836. Jacksonites weren’t thrilled at his supporting of Van Buren.
1836 Van Buren won by the popular votes of 765,483 to 739,795. 170 to 124 votes in the electoral college. He was the first President born in America He served for eight years He was above average in intelligence, education, and training The Election
Martin Van Buren’s Jackson problems Van Buren inherited Jackson’s numerous and vengeful enemies He threatened to trigger war with the British
Separation of Government and the Bank Mobs started forming about three weeks before Van Buren. He had to take the full force of it. Van Buren came up with the “Divorce Bill” His plan was to separate the government from the bank. His plan was never very popular.
