2 Van Buren selected by Jackson  He was from New York  Served as Vice president under Andrew Jackson  Jackson’s chose him as his successor in 1836.  Jacksonites weren’t thrilled at his supporting of Van Buren.

3 1836  Van Buren won by the popular votes of 765,483 to 739,795.  170 to 124 votes in the electoral college.  He was the first President born in America  He served for eight years  He was above average in intelligence, education, and training The Election

4 Martin Van Buren’s Jackson problems  Van Buren inherited Jackson’s numerous and vengeful enemies  He threatened to trigger war with the British

5 Separation of Government and the Bank  Mobs started forming about three weeks before Van Buren.  He had to take the full force of it.  Van Buren came up with the “Divorce Bill”  His plan was to separate the government from the bank.  His plan was never very popular.
