ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Knowledge density /maturity Time/adoption Product Adoption Innovative idea Invention Open Innovation Culture can accelerate knowledge faster Knowledge acceleration is vital

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Open Innovation is an ecosystem  Bloodhound SSC - A small innovative team, low budget, one common vision and using the right culture – designing something as complex as a ‘jet fighter’ for the next World Land Speed Record – 1000mph “People engage in radical innovation not because they get paid for it, but because they want to.” Gene Meieran, Intel Fellow.

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Education – built on open principles Academia – Publication – key aspect - verification, - recognition, - education HE – more than just knowledge – know + how “Graduateness” – application / use Tension – Publish vs Patent ?

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com IPO Fast Forward 2012 Project Brief Bloodhound SSC (www.bloodhoundssc.com) is a world land speed record project which will create novel technologies and processes to achieve its goal of 1,000mph. We have designed the ‘Bloodhound Open Access User Community Model’ (BOAUCM), where IP generated from the innovative design/engineering will, via HEIs and open-source methods, be made available to UK manufacturing, principally SMEs, to improve the manufacturing competitiveness of UK industry. The value of making the IP open-source (free to access) is that both education and industry can develop and adopt new technologies and processes that have been de-risked, and can use the Bloodhound vehicle as a reference to improve adoption and exploitation.www.bloodhoundssc.com BOAUCM has been promoted by the University of the West of England (UWE) and an open-access data repository to capture manufacturing and design knowledge and expertise for KE. This proposal seeks to accelerate the process of KE through key stages, including developing the Bloodhound community to critical mass, KE and dissemination practices, and creating 10 SME demonstrator projects. Outputs of the project include engagement with over 100 UK universities, dissemination to over 1,000 SMEs, and a proven model that can demonstrate sustainability and contribution to UK manufacturing competitiveness.

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Special Interest Group (SIG):

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Community tools need to be ‘Socially Friendly’ It needed simplifying… Early working names for the repository: Open Access User Community (OAUC)? Southampton Data Repository (SDR)? Bloodhound Open Access User Community (BHOAUC)? Its now called ‘K-Box’ (Derived from Knowledge (Data + Context) and HumBox an Ed- Share platform used by Universities)

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Web Integration ‘K-Box’ now linked to the main Bloodhound SSC website m/education/bloodhounduniver sity m/education/bloodhounduniver sity page)

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com K-Box ‘Open Access’ Resource

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com What does a “1000mph Educational tag cloud” look like?

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Example K-Box Resource Bloodhound SSC aero data for all the simulations are now freely available in K-Box

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Bloodhound SSC Lower Chassis data is now available in K-Box Example K-Box Resource

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Requirement from the driver, Andy Green, to design a custom steering wheel for Bloodhound SSC. The last steering wheel from Thrust SSC was not very comfortable (pictured right.) Bloodhound SSC design evolution progressed along a conventional iterative design process Design was being driven by functional requirements and slow to evolve. We used to help come up with a faster, unconstrained design process. Lancaster University (Crowd Source Design) Example Collaborations

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Working with Lancaster University, a 2 week project was launched which generated 25 new iterations and fundamentally changed the direction of the design philosophy. Lancaster University (Crowd Source Design) Example Collaborations

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com ‘The 10 second design review’ Example Collaborations

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Bloodhound philosophy C.2010Bloodhound philosophy C.2012 Lancaster ‘Crowd Source’ project Example Collaborations

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Final Design Thumb clearance for easier transition from power grip to button operation remodeled Reshaped lower yoke arms Removed all LED’s

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Final Article

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Technology Integration F1 Engine Rocket Jet

ENGINEERING ADVENTUREwww.BLOODHOUNDSSC.com Example Key Outcomes and Highlights K-Box Resources (live on release) All of the aero data has been uploaded All of the rear chassis data has been uploaded Rest of the vehicle data will be uploaded as it is released for man’f 68 registered users 107 uploaded resources 7569 resource accesses Key Conferences/Events (not exhaustive) Presented at National HE STEM 2012 Conference Finalist in ‘THE Awards’ 2012 for piloting a new Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) Open Educational Resource OER Conference Collaborations (not exhaustive) Worlds 1 st nano-scale 3DP WLSR car to inspire Physics students SME collaborations – LMS, Zenotech, Materialise, Ogle, Cambridge Design Partners, Delcam, Adept Science, MET Office
