2 Framing the Learning Standard RL 3.4 Identify the use of rhythm, rhyme, and alliteration in poetry. Objective Students will analyze poems finding examples of rhythm, rhyme, and alliteration.

3 Rhythm The pattern of sounds, beats, or speed in a poem. It is like singing a song. Rhyme Words that sound the same such as “cat” and “hat,” or “shoe” and “two.” Alliteration When several words in the sentence begin with the same consonant sound. Example: dance, dare, and drop.

5 Slithery, Slippery, Scaly Old S nake Slithery, slippery, scaly old snake, surely your body must be a mistake. You eyes, mouth and tongue wisely stay on your head. It seems that your body is all tail instead. You gobble your dinner, you swallow it whole -- a mouse or a frog or a turtle or mole. Ugh! Why don' you eat ice cream or chocolaty cake?
