Poetic Device Illustrations By: Nick, Jeffrey

Rhyme Sounds match at the end of the lines of the Poetry. There once was a cat with a nice hat. Who moved as slow as a fat rat.

Repetition Repeating a word or words for effect. For hours and hours, we walked, in search of food. Days after days passed, all hope was lost.

Alliteration Repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of a series of words. Nonchalant Nick noticed jolly Jeffrey jumping joyfully.

Onomatopoeia Words that sound like what they mean.

Rhythm A pattern of sound in a poem. There once was a frog named Bob Who once had a happy job. He stepped on a rake. And hopped in the lake.

Consonance Repetition of consonant sounds at the middle or at the end of words I'm a spunky funky monkey. Look at me, I'm so flunkey.

Simile A comparison between two dissimilar things using "like" or "as". Tracing paths on the thick, white snow like a slithery snake. The finish line awaited me with open arms.

Metaphor Comparing two dissimilar items without using "like" or "as". Life is a bundle of joy, waiting to be sprung open.
