6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 Hassan Moezzi A New Approach Welcome to the Model Data Centre

6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 Operational Intent Mid life Expected end of life Year 1 Time Operational intent Usable Capacity of room Total available KW Capacity=W/m 2 x area

6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 The Reality… Mid life Expected end of life Year 1 Time Typical Operation Operational intent Lost Lifespan Stranded Capacity Usable Capacity of room Total available KW Hot Spots create a mid-life crisis? Premature end-of-life for the data center. Hot Spots

6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 Why is there stranded capacity? IT operation decisions have engineering impact on: Efficiency (increased Opex through energy costs) Resilience (increased risk of thermal downtime) Longevity (increase in Capex caused by stranded capacity) Causes: IT Deployment decisions do not take into account the engineering impact of operational decisions IT Deployment decisions do not consider air flow/cooling management

6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 Lack of Airflow Management Did you know that all mission critical facilities lose more than 30% of their data center capacity because of hotspots? Why? IT Equipment is air cooled There are no standards for cooling design of IT Equipment. IT equipment designs change over time. IT equipment deployment changes over time. Data Center cooling infrastructure is fixed over its lifetime. The owner/operator has the responsibility to deliver sufficient airflow and cooling to every piece of IT equipment at all times. Servers Switch Storage

6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 Capacity planning is impossible without airflow management Same equipment, one works... one fails. Servers Switch Storage

6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 The Physics of Airflow and Cooling Equipment Manufacturer No Man’s Land Facilities Manager There is a lack of effective communication between the Equipment Suppliers and the Building Services Industry

6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 Current Process Infrastructure IT Equipment Cabinets

6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 What you’ll see today Infrastructure IT Equipment Cabinets The Virtual Facility The Virtual Facility is a full 3- dimensional mathematical representation of the physical data center at any point in time.

6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 Many teams... One goal Engineering based decisionsBusiness / Operational based decisions

6SigmaDC Conference & User Training, 15 th – 17 th November 2011 Closing Remarks Mid life Expected end of life Year 1 Time Typical Operation Operational intent Reclaimed Capacity Operating with a Virtual Facility Reclaimed Lifespan Capacity of room Total available KW “Data centers seldom meet the operational and capacity requirements of their initial design” - Gartner
