1 Four verbs that use être or avoir in the passé composé sortir, passer, monter, descendre

2 These four verbs take être unless they have a direct object. Elle est sortie de la maison. BUT: Elle a sorti une feuille de papier. –She went out of the house. / She took out a sheet of paper. Il est passé le café. BUT: Il a passé le sel. –He passed by the café. / He passed the salt. Elle est montée le cheval. BUT: Elle a monté le poster. –She got on the horse. / She put up the poster. Je suis descendu les escaliers. BUT: Jai descendu le livre de létagère. –I went down the stairs. / I took the book down from the shelf.

3 You only have agreement with avoir if the direct object is placed in front of the noun: Elle a sorti une feuille de papier. (no agreement) –She took out a sheet of paper. La feuille de papier? Elle la sortie. (agreement) ( l represents a feminine noun: la feuille de papier) –The sheet of paper? She took it out.
