2 There are two forms of the past in French. You have already learned the passé composé. The other form is limparfait.

3 Limparfait You start with the nous form of the verb You drop the –ons ending. You add the following endings.

4 Les terminaisons ais ait ions iez aient

5 You use limparfait when you are: – setting the scene – describing something – talking about habitual or repeated actions – the action has no real beginning or ending

6 They were working. Ils travaillent. She was finishing. Elle finissait. We were giving the book back. Nous rendions le livre.

7 There are three irregulars: – être ét – falloir fallait – pleuvaitpleuvait

8 cer and ger verbs -cer verbs will add the ç in all forms except the nous and vous! This is different than the present. -ger verbs will add the - e in all forms except the nous and vous!
