Its southernmost portion, known as Salento peninsula, forms a high heel on the "boot" of Italy.

WAYS2EUROPE Prg: WAYS2EUROPE 2013-1-DE3-COM06-35802 6 IISS BACHELET/ALPI COPERTINO (LE) - ITALY Our own school, which is very close to the Angevin castle, is named Bachelet/Alpi after the names of Vittorio Bachelet and Ilaria Alpi. The former was an Italian politician and jurist who was murdered by the Red Brigades in 1980. The latter was an Italian journalist killed in Somalia, together with her camera operator. She worked for Italian public television broadcaster RAI.
