The Vampire Diaries is a supernatural drama television series developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, based on the book series of the same name written by L. J. Smith. The series premiered on The CW Television Network on September 10, 2009. The series takes place in Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictional small town haunted by supernatural beings. The main focus of the series is the love triangle between the protagonist Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and vampire-brothers Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). As the narrative develops in the course of the series, the focal point shifts on the mysterious past of the town involving Elena's malevolent doppelgänger Katherine Pierce and the family of Original Vampires, all of which have an evil agenda of their own.
Nina Constantinova Dobreva was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. She moved to Canada at the age of two and has lived in Toronto, Ontario since. From a very young age she showed great enthusiasm and talent for the arts: Dance, Gymnastics, Theatre, Music, Visual arts, and Acting! Modeling jobs led to commercials, which then turned into film auditions. Shortly after, she booked roles in feature films "Fugitive Pieces", "Away From Her" and the popular television series "Degrassi: The Next Generation" on CTV. Nina loves to travel and has often visited Europe both for pleasure, as well as competing internationally representing Canada in Aesthetic gymnastics. She enjoys playing volleyball, soccer, swimming, rock climbing, wake boarding, snowboarding, and horse back riding to name a few. But above all acting is her passion, and she sees it as an adventure that has just begun; she believes that the journey and the characters we create along the way will help us understand ourselves.
The son of a massage therapist and a building contractor, Somerhalder was born and raised in the small southern town of Covington, LA. Boating, swimming, fishing and training horses filled much of his recreational time growing up, as did the school drama club and performing with the local theater group. With his mother's encouragement, at age 10 he began a modeling career that took him to New York each summer. By junior high, he opted to put modeling on the back burner and focus more on sports and school. A few years later, when the opportunity to model in Europe arose, Somerhalder grabbed it, embarking on an enriching path of work, travel and study that took him to cities including Paris, Milan and London. At 17, he began studying acting in New York, and by 19 had committed himself to the craft, working with preeminent acting coach William Esper. His fate was sealed while working as an extra in a club scene in the feature film Black & White(1999). A talent manager visiting a client on the set spotted Somerhalder in a crowd scene of 400 and immediately signed him for representation. Happy to be anchored in New York, Somerhalder spends much of his time studying acting, writing and practicing yoga. His recreational interests include water and snow skiing and horseback riding.
Paul was raised in the Marlboro, New Jersey. His parents are Polish and many of his relatives live in Poland. Until the age of 16, he spent 4 months of every year in Poland. He has 3 sisters, two younger and one older. His eldest sister is an attorney. Paul attended the Christian Brothers Academy as well as Marlboro High School. He was expelled from the first school for getting into fights. It was his troubled youth that led him towards acting. He was forced by a teacher to do a school play, when he was in the third grade, but found acting a safe haven. Whilst in his junior year at Marlboro, he landed the role of Max in "The Guiding Light" (1952). Due to his acting schedule, he transferred schools to Lakewood Prep school. He graduated in 2000. He went on to Rutgers University but, because he was being offered roles, he decided to quit after one semester. His breakthrough role came in Vampire diaries(2009). He auditioned for both the roles of Damon, the bad vampire brother, and Stefan, the good vampire brother. But they decided he would work better as Stefan. He currently resides in Los Angeles and Atlanta, where he continues filming on 'The Vampire Diaries.
The first part of the season focuses on the introduction of the vampires, specifically the lives of the vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore who return to their birth town after a long period of absence, Stefan wanting to be the first to conquer the heart of Elena, and Damon wanting to revive his long-lost love Katherine, Elena's doppelgänger, trapped in a tomb. It also deals with Victoria "Vicki" Donovan's transformation into a vampire and her death. Later, Anna makes an appearance. She is a vampire who came to town around the Night of the Comet, and planned to open the tomb to save her mother Pearl, but accidentally also frees the other vampires in the tomb. The second part of the season introduces the released tomb vampires, although Katherine isn't among them. They end up meeting up with Pearl and Anna, who are housing all the tomb vampires to "take back" their town. John Gilbert is also introduced, who is Elena's biological father, and plans to use using the Gilbert device to destroy all the tomb vampires. The season concludes with the celebration of the town's founder's day, ending the battle of the tomb vampires and greets the final return of Katherine.
The second season focuses mainly on the arrival of Elena's doppelgänger Katherine Pierce and on her reasons for returning to Mystic Falls. It also introduces werewolves. Tyler's werewolf uncle, Mason Lockwood, arrives after the death of Tyler's father and tells Tyler about the so-called "Lockwood curse" in their family. To activate the werewolf gene, the person must kill someone. Katherine turns Caroline into a vampire, so as to have a spy against Stefan and Elena. Katherine's main reason for returning to Mystic Falls is to find the moonstone, with the help of Mason, who is killed by Damon. Katherine calls in a favor from a witch named Lucy to get the stone. Lucy casts a spell so that when Katherine is hurt, it also affects Elena. When Lucy finds out that another Bennett is at the party and that Katherine had deceived her, she puts a spell on the moonstone, injuring Katherine. Damon then leaves her in the original tomb. She tells him that her reason for not killing Elena is that she is in danger. Elena is later kidnapped and held hostage by vampires Rose and Trevor, who have been on the run from the Originals (the first generation of vampires). Rose reveals to Elena that she is the Petrova doppelgänger and needs to be sacrificed to break the sun and moon curse. Katherine was also a Petrova doppelgänger, who used Trevor to help her escape from the Originals and Rose to turn her into a vampire to save herself. Elena is rescued by Stefan and Damon.
Over the course of season three, more about Klaus and The Original Family will be revealed as will his motives for wanting Stefan on his side. Stefan becomes darker, Damon and Elena struggle with the guilt of their growing bond even as they work together to bring Stefan back. Caroline and Tyler grow closer, causing a war between their two families. Ghosts from Jeremy's past have a message for him, and begin to affect his relationship with Bonnie. The first episode of the season featured Elena's 18th birthday, "There will be a small time jump [from where last season ended] as we celebrate Elena's birthday. But as is the pattern in Mystic Falls, the event never reaches its climax." Executive producer Julie Plec revealed in an interview with TV Guide that Elena will have to deal with her attraction towards Damon while they look for his brother Stefan, she also revealed that Tyler and Caroline will be happy for a while until something goes horribly wrong and that there is an agenda happening with our ghosts that isn't just, 'Hey, I want to make amends with my loved ones', regarding the ghosts of Jeremy's past.
Bonnie trying to make Elena human again with magic
The Pastor's daughter, and old friend of the Gilberts, April Young (Grace Phipps), returns to town following her father's death. Meanwhile, a vampire hunter, Connor Jordon, is investigating the supernatural population of Mystic Falls under the ruse of investigating the explosion that killed the Council. Using gloves made of vervain, Connor discovers Tyler has vampire blood in him and immediately shoots him, but Tyler escapes while Connor is reloading. Jeremy meets Connor at the Mystic Grill and notices a tattoo only he can see. Despite Stefan's best efforts, Elena is having trouble keeping animal blood down, and turns to Damon for help. Insisting she needs blood from the vein, he allows Elena to drink from him; however, she is unable to keep down Damon's blood as well. At the memorial held for the victims of the explosion, Connor kidnaps, stabs, and brings April to the second floor of the church, trying to use her blood to draw out any vampires in the church. Matt allows Elena, who is losing control because of the blood, to feed on him inconspicuously. Since Tyler is a hybrid, he reveals himself and allows Connor to shoot him to protect his vampire friends, who escape during the panic started by the public shooting. When Elena and Caroline go to rescue April, Elena begins to lose control and tries to attack April. However, Caroline stops her, and Elena pulls it together enough to heal and compel April. Damon tries to fight Connor in the parking lot, but is overpowered. Stefan comes to his aid and Connor makes a run for it. However, Stefan is upset that Damon blood-shared with Elena and punches him. The episode ends with Connor finding a note written by the Pastor about a "greater evil," and Elena and her friends having a private memorial for everyone they have lost.
In the hospital, Connor breaks in and steals Tyler's werewolf venom. The gang returns to school, and Matt allows Elena to feed on him in their old make-out spot. On their way inside, they discover that a curfew has been put into effect due to the shooting at the church. Stefan tries to show Elena that being a vampire can be fun, but Rebekah also returns to school and begins to torment Elena by bringing up Alaric and tempting her with blood. Connor comes to the school and tells Jeremy that the reason he can see Connor's tattoo is because he is a potential hunter. Connor uses force to get Matt to confess who is feeding off him, but he lies and says it's Rebekah. Klaus returns to protect his hybrids from Connor, and takes residence in the Lockwood house. Haley, a female werewolf who helped Tyler break Klaus' sire-bond, arrives, and Klaus suspects they had a less-than-platonic relationship in the Appalachia's. Meanwhile, Rebekah decides to throw an anti-curfew party at her house, and Elena and Stefan decide to attend. At the party, Rebekah steals Elena's ring and nearly destroys it. Elena, who had previously convinced Damon to give her the White Oak Stake, plans to stake Rebekah, but Stefan intervenes and convinces her to come with him to blow off steam (not before Elena makes a grand exit from the party by doing an unassisted keg stand). When Stefan and Elena return, she becomes sick due to the keg being spiked with werewolf venom. Meanwhile, Damon and Klaus, who have temporarily teamed up, trap Connor in the hospital storage room via rigged explosives. Connor attempts to stake Klaus, but Klaus disarms him. Upon seeing a familiar symbol on the stake, Klaus realizes Connor is one of The Five. When Connor triggers the explosives, Klaus saves him and holds him captive to pump him for information. Klaus, acting out of character, gives Elena his blood and heals her, saying he may have a use for her after all. At the end of the episode, April stays behind at Rebekah's, who is also recovering from the werewolf venom, to help clean up and befriends her.
Klaus and Damon captured Connor, but he suddenly blew the east wing up
Klaus and Rebekah realize Connor is one of "The Five," a clan of legendary vampire hunters that existed 900 years before. Rebekah, who had fallen in love with their leader, Alexander, discovered they possessed an "Ultimate Weapon" against vampires, and that the key to finding it was using their swords to decode their tattoos (hunter's mark). However, Alexander discovered Rebekah was a vampire, and used a dagger and her and her brothers. Klaus, unaffected by the dagger, killed Alexander and his fellow hunters, and un-daggered his family. Meanwhile, Bonnie, Elena, and Damon head to Whitmore College, where they meet Professor Shane, who appears to be a believer in the supernatural, and takes a liking to Bonnie. At a party being thrown on campus, Damon teaches Elena how to feed properly. At the party, Elena becomes intoxicated by the blood and dances with Damon. However, she is snapped out of her trance by a scared Bonnie. Elena becomes scared she might become like Damon, much to his offense. Stefan learns the "Ultimate Weapon" of The Five is a possible cure for vampirism, and tricks Rebekah into revealing she buried Alexander with his sword. Klaus has Jeremy draw a picture of the tattoo, but finds it's incomplete, and that it only continues to form as long as Connor kills vampires. Meanwhile, Connor escapes Klaus by killing one of his hybrids, and leaves to find the one who sent him to Mystic Falls in the first place - Professor Shane. Klaus once again daggers Rebekah.
After being told by Shane that the truth about his tattoo will be revealed, Connor returns to Mystic Falls, agreeing to kill humans if necessary. Stefan and Klaus team up once again to stop Connor, but Klaus leaves to find Alexander's sword. Connor takes Jeremy, Matt and April hostage. April who doesn't know of vampires yet, and so thinks Connor is delusional and is naturally scared of him. Stefan and Damon argue on the best course of action. Damon is knocked unconscious and the situation turns violent when one of Klaus's minions is sent to stand up to Connor. Meanwhile, Shane is trying to get Bonnie to get over her guilt via hypnosis, which at first appears not to work when he tries to get her to light a single candle, but when Bonnie opens her eyes she sees she lit every candle in the room. Jeremy tries to talk to Connor, who explains a friend of his was once turned into a vampire but he had to put that friend down, and then the tattoo began to appear. Elena breaks in and attacks Connor, but he is taken away by Stefan. Damon catches up to them and confronts Stefan on why he doesn't kill Connor and he explains Connor is the key to a cure. When Connor makes a run for it, the brothers witness him being killed by Elena, much to her guilt.
Elena is hallucinating about the death of Connor, which is slowly driving her mad. Klaus informs the Salvatore brothers that Elena needs to be locked away, because eventually she will try to kill herself. After stealing her away from the brothers, he explains that due to killing the original five hunters, he experienced the same thing and there is no cure. Meanwhile, Shane is hosting an exhibition at the school with Bonnie's help. Damon and Bonnie turn to him for answers. He tells them that Elena's hallucinations are due to a witch's curse and the only cure is for a potential hunter to make a first kill and pass along the last hunter's powers. Jeremy has discovered the beginnings of the mark on him. Stefan goes to break Elena out only to have her attack him and escape. She goes to the bridge where she died and the hunter, Katherine, and her mother convince her to take her own life. She drops her daylight ring into the water. Stefan sends Damon to bring her back. Klaus provides Jeremy with one of his hybrids to kill to complete his transition to a hunter and break the curse. The curse is broken just as dawn comes, and Damon saves Elena by throwing them both in the river. He tells Elena that Stefan had been lying to them, but it was all for her. Stefan and Elena sit on the front steps and talk. Elena admits that as a vampire, her feelings for Damon have been magnified, and Stefan tells her he can't do this anymore so they mutually decide to split up.
The Miss Mystic Falls pageant is back, and Elena and Caroline help April find something to wear. Meanwhile, Caroline calls Stefan and Stefan tells Caroline about Elena's feelings for Damon, which Caroline objects to. Klaus shows up shortly afterwards, questioning his trust in him. Damon and Stefan's relationship is strained but nonetheless, they still search for the cure. Caroline and Elena are suspicious of Shane, who Damon decides to confront. Ever since awakening as a hunter, Jeremy has been having nightmares of killing Elena, and Stefan uses criminals to provide vampires to complete Jeremy's tattoo. Hayley and Tyler work to break the sire bond of Klaus's hybrids. Caroline is stressed by a favor she owed Klaus- a date. Klaus makes her jealous of Hayley and Tyler's friendship, but also charms her and she asks if he ever wanted to be human again. Jeremy's hunter instinct develops to the extent where he grows a hatred for vampires and attacks Stefan. Damon asks why Shane showed up in Mystic Falls in the first place and reveals his vampirism to him. Jeremy arrives at the pageant and attacks Elena, nearly killing her, but she is rescued by Stefan and Matt. Stefan reveals to Elena he provided vampires for Jeremy to kill and she replies she doesn't want her humanity back if it costs her brother his. Matt moves into her house and Elena decides to stay in the Salvatore House. Stefan then decides to leave, unable to stay in the same house as Elena. It is eventually revealed that Shane and Hayley are working together to break the sire bond with Klaus's hybrids. Later, Elena has a talk with Damon, which leads to a dance between the two and sex afterwards, all while Caroline and Stefan figure out that Elena is sired to Damon.
After Elena and Damon have a hot session of kissing and more in the morning, Stefan arrive to the Salvatore's house and confronts Damon with a suspicion (he and Caroline think that Elena is sired to him). Stefan tells Damon to tell Elena to drink from a blood bag and see if she can drink from it, since he believes the only reason she can drink straight from the vein is because Damon told her so. Damon goes ahead and tries, only to see that Elena really is able to drink from blood bags now. Damon decides to go help Stefan investigate on the sire bond. Searching for answers, Damon and Stefan visit modern day New Orleans to see if they can find anyone who remembers the events of their last visit in 1942, including one of Damons former flames, Charlotte. While the Salvatore brothers are out of town, Elena, Caroline and Bonnie share a girls night, but emotions run high when Elena tells them that she can drink from a blood bag now, after Damon told her to try it out. Caroline gets angry at Elena's stubbornness and how she is so smitten with Damon and accidentally reveals that Elena is sired to Damon. Meanwhile, at Hayleys urging, Tyler confronts one of Klaus hybrids, Kimberly, and the situation quickly escalates into violence (the hybrids kidnap Caroline to torture her). Tyler and Elena ends up saving Caroline, with the friends making up. Finally, Damon is faced with a heartbreaking decision, he has to leave Elena forever if he wish to break the sirebond; However, Elena tries to convince him not to go, because she believes that her feelings are real.
