2 Mobile device types Pagers – Mostly RIM devices (proprietary OS) – 2-way paging – Use Mobitex and DataTAC wireless data protocols – Blackberry devices use Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks – Wireless email, SMS, custom applications (Java) – Monochrome screens – Very reliable Always On, Always Connected

3 Mobile device types PDAs – Palm (Palm OS), HP (Windows Mobile) – Email, Internet, Location Services – Custom applications (.NET) – Data entry with stylus and handwriting recognition (Graffiti developed by Palm) – Cradling to users desktop PC for data synchronization

4 Mobile device types Netbooks – Many manufacturers, mostly Windows XP OS (some Windows CE, some Linux) – Limited processing power compared to laptops, approx. 1.3 – 1.6 GHz – Range of screen sizes, from 5 diagonal to over 11, weight between 2 and 3 pounds – Much cheaper than laptops, and lack some features, like an optical drive
