1 Siemens CLS LED signal retrofit

2 Content LED signal retrofit Introduction Background
Standard Siemens LED signal The Siemens retrofit solution Scope Benefits Specific site examples Availability and typical pricing Questions

3 Background For new installation ELV is usually the best solution
Will deliver greater safety, lower installation costs and reduced carbon footprint compared to LV However, there are thousands of sites already installed using LV incandescent signals Much of this installed equipment is still serviceable The cost of mass upgrade to ELV may be difficult to justify The Siemens LED signal retrofit offers a cost effective solution to achieving lower running costs and reduced carbon footprint on many incandescent sites

4 Standard Siemens CLS LED signal
Helios CLS with Lamp Monitoring Facility (LMF) Benefits: Robust Helios signal body SIRA high phantom lens Lamp monitoring compatibility with all Siemens controllers Reduced power compared with HI signals Helios CLS with LMF LMF Module CLS Module 12 digit unique access code

5 Current monitoring of incandescent lamps
How does the LMF work? Controller lamp monitoring typically uses the current consumed by a signal to indicate if it is on Most existing controllers are designed to monitor incandescent lamps Current is sinusoidal and predictable Of sufficient value to be easily measured To simplify hardware and software current is measured at defined points in the supply voltage waveform. Lamp supply voltage Current monitoring of incandescent lamps Lamp supply current Typical current measurement points

6 Current monitoring of LED signals
How does the LMF work? LED signal currents are much lower than for incandescent lamps Current waveforms are often poor and difficult to predict, particularly as the supply voltage changes Cannot be monitored by standard controllers The LMF is a highly intelligent unit which adds a current pulse to satisfy the controllers expectations Should the LED module (or LMF) fail, all current is removed so that the controller can sense the signal failure Current monitoring of LED signals Lamp supply voltage Typical current measurement points LED supply current

7 Standard Siemens CLS LED signal
Helios CLS with Lamp Monitoring Facility (LMF) Benefits: Robust Helios signal body SIRA high phantom lens Lamp monitoring compatibility with all Siemens controllers Reduced power compared with HI signals Disadvantages Integral LMF adds significant cost LMF raises power consumption above basic CLS LED levels Complicates retrofit on-street Helios CLS with LMF LMF Module CLS Module 12 digit unique access code

8 The Siemens LED retrofit - Overview
Provides effective retrofit kits for existing incandescent signals Helios Peek Elite Eliminates the need for the LMF unit but retains full lamp monitoring facilities Reduces cost Reduces power consumption Is fully compatible with ST800 and ST900 intersection controllers

9 The Siemens LED retrofit – Realised benefits
Reduced power compared with HI signals and standard Helios CLS Fully RLM compatible and meets the timing requirements of TR2210 and TR2500 Can usually be added to existing controllers without re-configuration Retains excellent optical performance delivered by Siemens Helios signals Protects investment in existing installed infrastructure Helios CLS (retrofit) LMF Module no longer needed Updated CLS Module 12 digit unique access code Retrofit modules supplied complete with new door, lens and hoods Minimises installation time Ensures best possible optical performance

10 The Siemens retrofit in detail
New retrofit LED modules in signal body doors for: Siemens Helios Peek Elite Replacement lamp switch cards Retrofit upgrade kit for ST800 and ST900 controllers ST800 Firmware (PB800 issue 26*) Filter kit ST900 Firmware (PB801 issue 8*) (PB815 issue 4*) (*or later version)

11 Detailed implementation considerations
The retrofit covers most ST800 and ST900 (LV) sites fitted with Helios or Peek Elite signal heads This retrofit facility is not available on the ST700, ST750 ST800P or any 30A controller sites Generally it is not necessary to re-configure the controller Changes to lamp monitoring implemented by handset command The number of signals that can be driven on each phase is less than standard controllers * For pedestrian signals with Wait indicators, this limit of 4 signals would normally consist of two reds and two waits.

12 Deciding which signals to upgrade
Lamp monitoring considerations influence the possible upgrade paths Vehicle Signals: Helios Incandescent: Simple upgrade, subject only to a limit of 8 signals per phase. Helios LED*: Simple upgrade, subject only to a limit of 8 signals per phase. Helios CLS + LMF: Simple upgrade, subject only to a limit of 8 signals per phase. Pedestrian Signals: Near-Side Pedestrian Signals: No need to upgrade – already LED based and should left in place. These units cannot be lamp monitored by any existing or new LV controllers. Far-Side Pedestrian Signals: The upgrade options are more complex and are determined by the presence of wait indicators and the desire to lamp monitor them. * Old style with many discrete LEDs:

13 Deciding which signals to upgrade – Pedestrian options
Option 1: Upgrade the red and green men and fit LED wait lamps. In this arrangement lamp monitoring of the waits is not possible, and neither is monitoring of the pedestrian red whilst the wait signal is illuminated. LED wait lamps are not monitorable by the controller, but offer low lower power consumption and reduced maintenance compared to their incandescent equivalents. Option 2: Upgrade the red and green men and continue to use incandescent wait lamps. Without re-configuration lamp monitoring of the waits is not possible, and neither is monitoring of the pedestrian red whilst the wait lamps are illuminated. However reconfiguring the controller and the use of external toroidal current sensors will remove these limitations if lamp monitoring of the incandescent waits is still required * Old style with many discrete LEDs:

14 Deciding which signals to upgrade – Pedestrian options
Option 3: Where only far sides signals and two incandescent waits are present, replace the Helios incandescent signals with Helios CLS + LMF. In this arrangement lamp monitoring of both the LED signals and incandescent waits is possible without re-configuring the controller (as they both continue to look like incandescent signals to the controller!). This is not a preferred option as it means a mix of standard Helios CLS + LMF and Helios NLM signals on the same site. However it provides a solution where monitoring incandescent wait indicators is desired and a controller reconfiguration is not desired. If the site to be upgraded has other signal arrangements, upgrade may still be possible with a controller re-configuration. Full details of all the possible signal upgrade options that can be attained are to be found in section 5 of the product handbook (667/HB/32921/007).

15 The Siemens retrofit – potential power savings
