Skid Steer Safe Operation E Light Electric Services, INC Safety Training Module 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC1

Pre – Operation Inspection The Machine must be in safe operating condition to be operated safely Equipment Inspection check list sheet Must be completed Daily Must be turned in When a deficiency is found Weekly if no deficiencies are found Report and have corrected any deficiencies 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC2

Walk Around Tires / tracks Frame structural components ROPS – Roll Over Protection Structure 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC3

Engine Compartment Checks Engine oil Must be between the full and low mark on dip stick Coolant Must be between the cold and hot marks on surge tank Battery Check for corrosion and loose terminals Belts & fan Guard Check for loose belts Check all guards in place Do not check with engine running 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC4

Hydraulic Fluid level (if low - why) If low it probably leaked from some where Leaks Stop and take corrective action Report it to a supervisor immediately This includes spill containment and clean up Check Cylinder packing's Hoses and Tubing Quick couplers Hydraulic tank itself 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC5

Fuel tank Fuel level Leaks Tank cap (dont forget to put it back on) Tampered with Dirt or any thing else that might have maliciously put into the tank 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC6

Attachments Connected Properly Lever up to disconnect Lever down to connect and bottom pins in place 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC7

Connected Properly 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC8

Attachments The right / safe attachment for the job In good condition 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC9

Start up Seat belt The seat belt is not a option Must be worn for Stability in the seat Back support Proper control of the controls The safety bar is not enough in a tipping situation. Interlock bar Do not tapper with any safety interlocks Do not enter machine with arms raised Fatalities have resulted from tampering with safety interlocks 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC10

Start Up cont. After starting check Gauges Warning lights Controls Direction Steering Lift Attachment lilt and tilt Auxiliary controls If controls do not preform properly It is not safe to operate no exceptions Report unsafe condition to supervisor immediately 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC11

Safe Operation Smooth is Safe Smooth is Efficient Smooth is Productive Fast is hard on you and hard on equipment Jerky movements = loss of control and Excessive wear and possible damage Hydrostatic drive controls for steering Ease in on controls Smooth turns Greatest drive power 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC12

Safe Operation - Controls Know the controls Different Manufacture – Different controls Different Model – Different Controls READ the Operators Manual 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC13

Safe Operation Understand Skid Steer Empty bucket front tires skid Full bucket rear tires skid This will make the difference working it tight areas Do not skid into objects or worse people 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC14

Understand Skid Steer With bucket full Back tires skid the rear of Skid Steer swings The tail swing can cause damage to objects when working in tight areas Could case severe possibly fatal injuries to any one in the tail swing area To the rear of Skid Steer's are large blind spots 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC15

Blind Spots Backing Great care and caution is need when backing All models have blind spots to the rear There is some lack of vision even to the side In tight situations with backing required Get help Get a spotter Keep people out of backing area Skid Steers have very quick movements 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC16

Safe Operations - Terrain Steep slopes Travel perpendicular up and down slope Travel heavy end up Empty - backup the slope Fully loaded - drive forward up the slope Do not cross steep slopes Be aware of traction 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC17

Safe Operations - Terrain Know What you are driving on and over Skid Steers are heavy 5000 lbs. and up 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC18

Safe Operations – Tight locations Know will the machine fit in tight conditions Remember how a skid steer turns 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC19

Safe Operations - Utilities Underground Utilities For Locates – 811 Requires 72 hour notice prior to digging Overhead Utilities 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC20

Safe Operation Tipping Know the safe load capacity Capacity labels are on the machine Not the tipping weight 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC21

Safe Operation - Stability Remember Stability The higher you lift The further you can go out of stability 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC22

Safe Operation Dump the load in the pile or truck Not in your lap If the bucket or forks are not self leveling You have to adjust level as you raise and lower Even with a self leveling system the machine will level raising the arms but dump the load without tilling back as you lower the load 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC23

Safe Operation Never allow anyone under a lifted load 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC24

Safe Operation Enclosed Areas All combustion engines replace breathable air with carbon monoxide 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC25

Safe Operation NO RIDERS ! 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC26

Fatal Mistakes Never leave the cab with the arms up Never attempt to operate form out side the seat 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC27

OSHA Reports Fatal Accidents Review of OSHA's Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) reveals that between 1997 and 2007, 100 accidents were recorded specifically involving skid- steer loaders. The deliberate bypassing of safety features (such as seatbelts and control interlock systems) was identified as the direct cause of 20% of these incidents, with all but one resulting in a fatality. 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC28

Shut Down Lower attachments Shut off Do not exit machine with engine running Remove key Secure machine from theft Never get in or out of with arms raises For maintenance or repair work requiring arms raised Get assistance and place cylinder lock 2/3/2012E Light Electric Services, INC29 Click here to return to the module home page and take the test.
