4 { KU SAILING } Parts of the Boat: Head Tack Clew Luff Leech Two Sails Main Sail Jib Sail Parts of a Sail Head Tack Clew Foot – bottom edge Leech – outer edge Luff – inner edge Head Tack Clew Leech Luff Foot The Main Sail is controlled by the skipper The Jib Sail is controlled by the crew

5 { KU SAILING } Parts of the Boat: Outhaul: stretches the foot of the sail out Cunningham: pulls the luff of the sail down. Sheet: a line that controls sail movement and trim Halyard: a line that hoists (raises) a sail Outhaul Main Sheet Jib Sheet Cunningham The halyards arent shown in this diagram, but there is a Main Halyard and a Jib Halyard

6 { KU SAILING } Parts of the Boat: Centerboard: allows the boat to plane forward with the wind, as opposed to being pushed sideways by it. Rudder: changes boat direction Tiller: allows the skipper to control the rudder Tiller Rudder Centerboard

7 { KU SAILING } Directional Terms: Bow: the front end of the boat Stern: the back end of the boat Forward: direction towards the bow Aft: direction towards the stern Bow Stern ForwardAft

8 { KU SAILING } Sailing Terminology: Port: left Starboard: right Windward: (closer) towards the wind Leeward: (farther) away from the wind Starboard Port Windward Leeward Windward and Leeward are directional terms only in reference to the wind
