Morning Worship Samuel – “I am listening” 6th October 2017 Bishop Justus Church of England School

4 Let the light of Christ shine in our lives
Gather The Lord be with you And also with you Let the light of Christ shine in our lives

5 Receive ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’ 1 Samuel 16:7

6 Engage Son of Elkanah and Hannah, Samuel was born (about 1100 BC) in answer to his mother’s prayers. As a child he was placed in the care of Eli, high priest at the tabernacle at Shilo. The Lord called Samuel at a young age to become a prophet. After Eli’s death, Samuel became the great prophet and judge of Israel and restored law, order, and regular religious worship in the land. God calls Samuel (a short animation)

7 Engage Some discussion ideas …
Sometimes we judge people by how they look or how old they are – what qualities should we look for in people? Samuel was young when he was called to be a leader – do you think that young people can lead communities, nations? How do you judge Theresa May’s leadership qualities? Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?” Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair. Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student. Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections. Video suggestion … Desmond Tutu’s thoughts on leadership

8 Respond Amen We thank you that you called people to be leaders
[Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …] We thank you that you called people to be leaders not because of how they look but because they have qualities of love, compassion and understanding. Help us to have those qualities in our lives. Amen Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …

9 Go out into the world with the light of Christ
