3 The War of 1812 The United States and Britain went to war in 1812. The British urged Native Americans to attack American settlers in the West. But the Osage did not support the British. They wanted to stay friendly with the United States. The Osage depended on the United States for trade. They also needed weapons to fight their enemies.

4 Native Americans Leave Missouri Native American groups signed many treaties giving up their land in Missouri. Many Osage moved to Oklahoma after giving up their land. The Osage Indian Reservation is located there. Reservation

5 Missouri’s Changing Population While most Missouri populations were growing, Native Americans were leaving the state. By 1825, the Osage had given up their land. The presence of settlers on the plains kept them from hunting. Most Native Americans moved to land in Kansas and Oklahoma that has been reserved for them by the United States government.

6 An Old Way of Life Painter George Catlin moved to St. Louis in 1830. From there, he made many trips to the Great Plains to record the way of life of Native Americans before they were driven from their lands.
