Development of Migration Andrea Frye December 2, 2015

Introduction Migration is the movement by people from one place to another with the intentions of settling temporarily or permanently in the new location. Three behaviors that influence migration are: 1.Human rights deprivation from their home country 2.Better living conditions 3.Improve economic status for themselves and their families

Immigration Policy in the U.S.A. (2011) by Daryl Cagle The cartoon represents the immigration policy in the U.S.A. against Mexican borders. As migrants climb through the fence and cross the border first they are handed a map of America. Then as they get to the other side they encounter four stands each with a different purpose. http://www.outsidethebelt way.com/wp- content/uploads/2011/05/ usa-keep-out-cagle- cartoon.jpg http://www.outsidethebelt way.com/wp- content/uploads/2011/05/ usa-keep-out-cagle- cartoon.jpg

Far and Away (1992) directed Ron Howard The film plays out as two migrants from Ireland that move to America to pursue their own prosperity. This work of art relates to the topic because it again shows taking the initiative of the two finding a better life for themselves by achieving employment, property, and independence. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104231/

The Arrival (2007) by Shaun Tan This graphic novel portrays the experience of a father migrating to a new land. The main character leaves his troubled homeland in search of a new home for his wife and daughter. His homeland is haunted giving the sense that he is trying to help his family escape a malevolent force. It is composed of small, medium, and large panels, and often features pages of full artwork. http://www.shauntan.net/books/the- arrival.html http://www.shauntan.net/books/the- arrival.html

The Migration Series by Jacob Lawrence Fine art that describes the journey of African Americans from the South to the North in a series of paintings. The series is based on the Great Migration of African Americans from the rural south to the urban north starting in the 1910s. This work relates to the topic because African Americans moved to the north to accomplish a better life, economic status, and leave the south where many African Americans were treated poorly. http://www.phillipscollection.org/migration_series/

Conclusion Immigrants decide to move to different countries for many reasons. Some reasons can be human rights deprivation, better living conditions, and trying to improve economic status for themselves and their families. All of these works of art show how difficult immigrants must go through to succeed in a new and strange environment.
