Establishment of Colonies in the New World 1534/Herny VIII had parliament to pass the Act of Supremacy – stating that the King was the head of the Church of England (Anglican Church) Resulted in the Puritans wanting to purify the Church of England of all Catholic Rituals. The Puritans immigrated first to the Netherlands (Holland) the New World calling themselves the Pilgrims.

3. Pilgrims Established Plymouth Colony after being granted a charter from the London Company Drafted the Mayflower Compact which established the first form of self government and democracy. Plymouth struggled at first but (only 1/2 survived the first winter) but due to help of the Indians they learned the skills to survive and prosper.

7. Massachusetts Bay Colony John Winthorp and the Puritans were granted a charter by King Charles I to colonize New England. John Winthorp served as the first governor Capital Boston (over 16,000 in population by 1640 in Boston and nearby towns. Opposed “Seperation Between Church and State”

9. Rhode Island Founded by Roger Williams – a Massachusetts minister who proposed the concept of the “Separation of Church and State Government)” - Exiled (banished because of his beliefs and founded the Providence of Rhode Island - Established based on religious tolerance “ Puritans Dissent”

12. Anne Hutchinson In the face of Adversity Setting: Across the leaf-strewn commons, they shuffled, bundled in their woolen cloaks to ward off the biting New England cold. The year was 1637, some of the 200 good people of Boston were on there way to watch the trail of one of their leading citizens, Anne Hutchinson. She stood accused of challenging the leadership of the minister. If she is found guilt, Hutchinson could be fined, flogged, or banished. Recently four Quakers were hanged for their beliefs. Everyone wanted to know if Hutchinson would stand up for her beliefs or compromise them to protect herself and her family?

16. Maryland Founded by Lord Baltimore Chartered Colony as a refuge for English Catholics feeling persecution in England Established the Toleration Act – which guaranteed religious freedom
