15 Common Law Based on precedent Judges refer to past cases when making decisions Common law exists in some states Also cal the doctrine of stare decisis Are there any rules at home that were set on precedent?

16 Statutory Law What are statutes? Statutes: Declare law on certain issues Order people to do something Forbid people for doing something Prevents discrimination Are passed by Congress, state legislature, local city councils, or town meetings.

17 Federal and State Statutes State Laws must not conflict with U.S. Constitution Each state makes own laws Ohio has a Senate and House of Reps Federal Laws past by Congress and signed by president Congress is comprised of members from each state to make laws Power to tax, spend, and borrow money

18 Court Decisions Court made law is case law 3 ways courts make law through common law tradition Highest court may change precedent by interpreting statutes by judicial review U.S. Supreme Court

19 Administrative Regulations Administrative Law Federal, state, and local legislatures may regulate certain activities May give power to an agency that needs full attentions –Federal Communications Commission (FCC) –Make own rules, enforce rules, investigate violators, decide guilt or innocence, punish

20 Sources of Law Select two amendments you feel are most important to your personal rights. Describe the reasons for your selections. Draft a list of “laws” you feel exist between parents and children. Consider the responsibilities that parents have toward their children as well as the responsibilities that children have toward their parents.
