Objectives - Identify the key characteristics of a Quality Presentation - Answer the question when and why should a video clip be used - Define what is “to much” - Demonstrate how a video clip is inserted and configured for a particular application.

General Rules of Power Point Design: Keep the background, text color, font, and slide transitions consistent. Avoid using the design templates within PowerPoint. Your presentation will lack originality since those templates have been in widespread use for years. Do not use too much text on a slide. The presentation should compliment your lecture but not serve as a script. Using phrases instead of complete sentences is a good idea. Use clip art and video to enhance your presentation, but use it sparingly. A good general rule is to use only 1-2 pieces of clip art on one slide.

General Rules of Power Point Design: Only use sound when it is appropriate. Excessive sound detracts from your oral presentation. Use the same design principals you would use for any desktop publishing document: clip art should flow with text, slides should be balanced, background and text colors should contrast well, etc. When presenting, make sure that your audience does not see the “Behind the Scenes” of PowerPoint by using the AV Mute button on your projector while you get the presentation set up. Simple is good!!!

With Microsoft PowerPoint® 97/2000, you can insert and play a variety of popular movie formats to make your presentation exciting and informative. Examples of movie formats you can use include.mpg,.mpeg, and.m1v. To insert a movie into a PowerPoint 97/2000 presentation 1.Select the slide you want to add the video to. 2.On the Insert menu, point to Movies and Sounds. 3.Click Movie from File, locate the folder that contains the video, and then double-click the video you want. 4.You are prompted to click Yes if you want the movie to play automatically when you move to the slide, or to click No if you want the movie to play only when you click the movie during a slide show.

To play a movie while editing your presentation Double-click the movie file in slide view (PowerPoint 97 or 2000) or normal view (PowerPoint 2000 only). To play a movie during a presentation Run the presentation as a slide show and then click the movie file, if you or the author set it up that way (see the procedure about inserting a movie, above). If you observe graininess or distortion in these movie clips, you can get information about minimizing this from the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q198333, PPT2000: Inserted Movies Appear Grainy When Played.

Customize how the movie plays in your presentation After you insert the movie, you can choose options that let you control how the movie will be played and how it will interact with the rest of your presentation. For instance, you might want to pause a timed slideshow until the movie has played. To set options that control how a movie plays during a slide show 1.Select the movie placeholder you want to set options for. 2.On the Slide Show menu, click Custom Animation, and then click the Multimedia Settings tab. 3.Select the options you want, or click More Options

Session 3 (Experimenting with MAGLEV vehicle design) 1. Construct a MAGLEV model vehicle that meets stated design criteria 2. Test and discuss which variables (ie. weight, balance, aerodynamics, guidance, etc.) affect the performance of the MAGLEV model vehicles 3. Improve the performance of a given MAGLEV model vehicle by modifying one or more variables
