Warm Up Make a KWL chart about World War One KWL What you KNOW about World War I What you WANT TO KNOW about World War I What you have LEARNED about World War I—leave blank for now. We’ll fill this in as the exit slip.

World War I Begins US History Unit 2 Day 6

Causes of World War I 4 MAIN causes – Militarism – Alliances – Imperialism – Nationalism

Militarism Countries in Europe were building up strong militaries “just in case” When everyone had them, they wanted to try them out.

Alliances Countries in Europe made ALLIANCES, or agreements to help each other in a war “If you get in a war, I’ll help you. If I get in a war, you help me” When one tiny war started, EVERYONE got pulled in. Central Powers: Germany, Austria, Turkey Allied Powers: England, France, Russia

Alliances

Imperialism European nations had taken over most of the world. Some countries wanted more. When the country got into the war, all the places it owned automatically got in too.

Nationalism People had extreme pride in their countries. They thought they could beat any other country easily, they weren’t worried about getting into a war.

MAIN was around for years. Then… Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the next person to be king of Austria was assassinated in Serbia Austria declared war on Serbia The alliances forced other countries to join World War One

The Schlieffen Plan Germany joined the war because they were allied with Austria. They had a plan that was to be the first thing they did if they got into a war. This was to attack France, not over their shared border, but by sneak attacking through Belgium. By invading Belgium, they involved England in the war, and by attacking France, they involved France and Russia in the war.
