6 May 12, 2016 US Response to Sputnik 1.National Aeronautics and Space Act is passed by the US Senate in 1958. 1.This act established NASA as the authority on the US Space Program. 2.Mercury Program is established to send a man to space and have them return safely. 3.In 1961, Yuri Gagarin and Alan Shepard become the first two men to be sent to space and return safely. 4.President John Kennedy’s response to Gagarin was made clear in a 1961 speech to Congress. 1.By the end of the 1960s he wanted the US to send a man to the moon.

8 May 12, 2016 Soviets Response to the Response 1.Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Premier, did not respond to Kennedy’s speech. 2.While the Premier was silent it was later learned that the Soviets were working on a mission to the moon in secret for over 9 years. 3.USA and USSR continue sending astronauts to space. 1.John Glenn becomes the first American to orbit Earth. 2.Valentina Tereshkova becomes the first woman in space. 4.In 1963, President Kennedy is assassinated, Lyndon Johnson becomes President. 5.In 1964, a coup in the Soviet Union deposes Khrushchev and Leonid Breshnev becomes the new Premier. 1.This coup sets the Soviet space program back 2 years.

9 May 12, 2016 US Takes the Lead 1.After the Mercury program, the US establishes the Gemini program. 1.These missions would be two man teams sent to space. 1.Hence the name Gemini. 2.Gemini gave flight and space time to many astronauts who would later man Apollo missions. 3.Overall there are 10 Gemini missions. 1.Gemini missions establish many firsts in space exploration. 2.Neil Armstrong is one of the Gemini astronauts. 4.After Gemini the United States started the Apollo program. 1.Apollo’s mission was landing a man on the moon.

11 Tragedy strikes 1.In January of 1967, during a rehearsal launch three astronauts were killed aboard Apollo 1. 1.Gus Grissom, who was in the Mercury program was one of the astronauts killed. 2.After the tragedy all manned space launches are suspended for 20 months. Crew of Apollo 1

12 May 12, 2016 Apollo Renews 1.Apollo renews manned flights with Apollo 7. 2.Apollo 8 was sent to the orbit the moon in 1968. 1.This mission produced one of the most famous pictures in history. 3.Apollo 9 and Apollo 10 conducted tests on the lunar module in early 1969. 4.On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 launched. 1.This would be the Apollo mission that would fulfill Kennedy’s promise of landing on the moon by the end of the 1960s.
