2. Objectives 0 Today, you will be learning about 0 Subject (S), Verb(V) and Object(O) 0 Words and Phrases 0 Understanding SVO will help you understand the structure of English sentences. This will help you when you correct the sentences in your writing.

3. Think! 0 Let’s begin with a simple sentence in English. 0 E.g. Terry loves Mary. 0 In the above sentence, there is a subject, verb and object. 0 Can you identify them?

4. Think! E.g. Terry loves Mary. 0 In the above sentence, 0 The subject is Terry. 0 The verb is loves. 0 The object is Mary. 0 Did you identify them correctly?

5. What is a verb? 0 A verb is an action word. 0 It describes the action that is being done. 0 E.g. jumps, shouts, cries 0 Can you think of other verbs?

6. What is a subject? 0 The subject is what the sentence is about, the main topic of the sentence. 0 E.g. Mary is pretty. 0 Who is the subject? 0 Ans: Mary, because the sentence is about Mary.

7. What is a subject? 0 It is also often the do-er of the sentence; the person or thing that is performing the action(verb). 0 E.g. Mary eats cakes. 0 Who is the subject? 0 Ans: Mary, because Mary is performing the action of eating.

8. What is an object? 0 It is who or what the verb (action) is being done to. 0 E.g. Mary eats cakes. 0 What is the object? 0 Ans: Cakes. The action (eat) is done to the cakes.

9. Putting it together… 0 Can you identify the subject, verb and object in the following sentence? Mary loves cakes. 0 Who is the subject? 0 What is the verb? 0 Who is the object?

12. Subject: Noun Phrase 0 John hit Tomy. 0 Lawrence hates dogs. 0 Dennis writes books. 0 Sam fixes cars. 0 In the above sentences, all the subjects are single words and refer to individual people. However, there are many ways to refer to people and things. It does not always have to be single words. Can you think of other ways to refer to people?

13. Subject: Noun Phrase 0 Lawrence hates dogs. 0 Can you replace Lawrence with a phrase? 0 E.g. many people, the tall boy 0 Lawrence hates dogs.  0 Who is the subject now? Many people hate dogs. The tall boy hates dogs.

14. Subject: Noun Phrase 0 Many people hate dogs. 0 Who is the subject? 0 The tall boy hates dogs. 0 Who is the subject? 0 Therefore, the subject does not always have to be a single word, one person or one thing. It can be a phrase, referring to many people and things. Many people. The tall boy.

Object: Noun Phrase 0 The same rule applies to objects. 0 In the sentences below, can you identify the objects? 0 John hit Tomy. 0 Lawrence hates dogs. 0 Dennis writes books. 0 Sam fixes cars. 0 Can you replace the objects with phrases? (object: Tomy) (object: dogs) (object: books) (object: cars)

16. Object: Noun Phrase 0 John hit Tomy. 0 Lawrence hates dogs. 0 Dennis writes books. 0 Sam fixes cars.  John hit the bullies.  Lawrence hates all animals.  Dennis writes journal articles.  Sam fixes all household appliances.

17. Verb and Verb Phrase 0 Do you remember what a verb is? 0 It describes the action that is happening in the sentence. 0 And just like subjects and objects, it can appear as a phrase.
