3 Millard Fillmore BORN- JANUARY 7, 1800 ( SUMMERHILL, NEW YORK) PRESIDENCY- 1850-1853 PARTY- WHIG SPOUSE(S)- ABIGAIL POWERS(1826-1853; HER DEATH) CAROLINE CARMICHAEL McINTOSH (1858-1874; HIS DEATH) OCCUPATION- LAWYER CHILDREN- MILLARD POWERS FILLMORE MARY ABILGAIL FILLMORE DEATH- MARCH 8, 1874 ( AGE 74 ) ( BUFFALO, NEW YORK )

4 Early Life Born in a log cabin in Moravia, Cayuga county. Married Abigail Powers Fillmore. Had one son along with one daughter. Millard Powers Fillmore and Mary Abigail Fillmore. After mourning from his first wife’s death on February 10, 1858 from pneumonia, Fillmore married Caroline Carmichael McIntosh Fillmore. He declined an honorary degree from Oxford University.

5 He never went to college. Even without a college education, Fillmore still managed to become a lawyer. Fillmore was vice president under Zachary Taylor. He attended New Hope Academy for 6 months in 1819. He then began to clerk for Judge Walter Wood of Montville, New York. Afterward, he began to study law.

6 Presidency/Professional/Military Was a lawyer. Didn’t have much of a military background except that the served in the New York Militia during the War of 1846. Worked for a cloth making company and as an apprentice for his father. Fillmore was part of the Whig party along with being the founder of the Whig party.

7 He supported the Compromise of 1850. – Abolished the slave trade in the District of Columbia. – Admitted California a free state. – Organized the territories of Utah and New Mexico with no reference to slavery. – Settled a Texas boundary dispute. – Established a stricter fugitive law. 13 th president. Did not appoint a vice president to replace himself.

8 Served two years and two hundred thirty-six days. Tried for presidency again in 1852 and 1856 but was not successful. He was on the New York State Assembly.

9 Retirement And Interesting Facts He established the White House library. 2 nd president to re-marry after the death of his first wife. Became president at the age of 50 after the death of President Taylor. When Fillmore took office, the entire cabinet offered their resignations. Planned for him and Abigail to travel widely and then return to Buffalo to build a new house.
