18 Yet in questions To ask if something has happened before now, use yet. Have you bought the soda yet? No, I haven’t. No, not yet. Not yet.

19 Note 2 a. We sometimes use already in questions to express surprise that something has happened sooner than expected. Has Carlos arrived already? The party doesn’t start until 8:00! Can you make a sentence with already to express surprise?

20 Note 2 Lynn: I’m giving a party next month. Max: Have you mailed the invitations yet? Lynn: Yes, I have. Lynn: I’m giving a party for my birthday. I mailed the invitations this morning. Max: You’ve mailed them already? Your birthday is three months away! In which of these conversations is Max surprised? Why?

21 Note 2 b. In American English, we sometimes use the simple past with already and yet. He has already chosen the music. He already chose the music. Which one of these sentences is in present perfect? Simple Past? Both these examples use already. Do these sentences have the same meaning? Yes!

Unspecified time in the past= present perfect + already Specific time in the past = simple past + time expression I have already seen the new movie. Present perfect I already saw the new movie. Simple past

23 Be Careful! When we use already, yet or still + present perfect, we do NOT use past time expressions. We’ve already met Carlos. We’ve already met Carlos last month. The simple past – not the present perfect is used with past time expressions. Unspecified time in the past: present perfect + already Specific time in the past: simple past + time expression

24 Note 3 ALREADY Have/ Has + already + past participle + (…) Have / has + past participle + (…) + already The usual placement of already is between a form of have and the past participle. YET / STILL Haven’t/ hasn’t + past participle + (…) + yet Still + haven’t hasn’t + past participle + (…) The usual placement of yet is at the end of a clause and the usual placement of still is before the present perfect form of a verb.
