2 Career Opportunities There are many opportunities to teach English to adult students in the United States, other English-speaking countries, and in almost every other country in the world. This course introduces you to these instructional contexts, and effective strategies and activities for teaching adults.

3 Adult Learning Theory Defines how adult learners are different from children and adolescents Has many implications for what kinds of strategies and activities are effective for teaching adults English The study of the characteristics of adult learners

4 Best Practices Cultural Responsive Teaching (CRT) Authentic Materials Project-Based Instruction

5 Culturally Responsive Teaching Honors students’ cultures and allows them to be experts in the content of the language that they are using Introduces students to other cultures Appropriate for adult learners because of their knowledge of their cultures and abilities to communicate about them The incorporation of students’ cultures and other cultures into the English language curriculum

6 Authentic Materials Give students exposure to and interaction with the real use of language that they will need outside the classroom Address adult learners’ desire for practicality in their English language instruction Real written and oral materials created by native English speakers for native English speakers

7 Project-Based Instruction Usually includes the comprehension and production of authentic materials Promotes development of all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing Appropriate for adult learners because of their longer attention spans and higher cognitive abilities Long-term projects broken up into smaller, individual tasks that students complete individually

8 The TESOL International Association and the TESOL Standards Provides a wealth of information and opportunities to English teachers, including the standards for their professional development and for teaching, workshops, courses, conferences, publications, and job listings The largest, more prestigious professional organization the field of teaching English to non-native speakers
