What is a risk? Another word for a risk is a CHANCE!!! When it comes to risk factors in relation to heart disease, a risk factor is something you can do to increase or decrease your chance at getting heart disease.

First-THE BAD NEWS!!! Heart Disease kills more Americans than any other condition. 60 million Americans have some form of cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease. That’s more than 40% of all deaths in the U.S.

RISK FACTORS Things you can control 1. Diet -Watch your FATS -Increase your FIBER 2. Cholesterol – a waxy fatty substance found in your bloodstream. 3. Blood Pressure-the force of blood against the walls of the arteries.

4. Weight- extra pounds mean extra work for your heart. 5. Exercise-an INACTIVE lifestyle greatly increases the risk of heart disease. 6. Smoking-smokers have a greater risk of experiencing heart attacks and strokes.

7. Alcohol Use-drinking too much alcohol can raise your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. 8. Stress-Everyone experiences stress. Handling stress poorly can increase your risk of heart disease. That’s the good news!!!

Risk Factors you CANNOT control 1. Family History-if it runs in your family it increases your risk. 2. Age-heart disease becomes more likely as you age. 3. Gender-men run a greater risk of heart disease than women.

4. Diabetes-a person with diabetes has a greater chance of developing heart disease. More than 80% of diabetics eventually die from heart disease.

Coronary arteries-carry oxygenated blood to the heart muscle. If these get blocked it can cause heart disease. Angina- caused by the narrowing of the coronary arteries, usually as a result of fats. Thrombosis- can slow down the flow of blood causing it to clot and block the blood vessel.
