WEIGHT LOSS SIMPLY EXPLAINED

THE ENERGY EQUATION The first law of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed from one type of energy to another.

YOUR BODY WEIGHT... depends on the difference between the calories that you consume versus the calories that you burn. This is called your Caloric Balance

WHAT IS A CALORIE? A Calorie or more correctly, a kilocalorie is the amount a energy required to raise the temperature of 1 litre of water by 1 degree Celsius.

HOW DOES YOUR BODY USE CALORIES Your body is capable of doing two things from the energy it absorbs Burn it (Metabolism) Store it (as Fat)

USED AND UNUSED ENERGY FROM FOOD Used energy is transformed into, heat energy, electrical energy, sound energy and movement (kinetic) energy by the body. Unused energy is stored as chemical energy to be used at another time, primarily as fat.

CALORIE RULES FOR WEIGHT LOSS AND WEIGH GAIN If you eat the same amount of calories that you burn your weight will not change. If you eat more calories than you burn you will gain weight. If you eat less calories than you burn you will lose weight.

DAILY CALORIE REQUIREMENT MALE ADULT EXAMPLE Male Age 30 Height 170cm Weight 80 Kg Activity Level – Light Daily Caloric Expenditure – 2500 calories

DAILY CALORIE REQUIREMENT FEMALE ADULT EXAMPLE Female Age 30 Height 170cm Weight 80 Kg Activity Level – Light Daily Caloric Expenditure – 2200 calories

WHAT IS DAILY CALORIC EXPENDITURE? The total energy that your body uses each day consists of: Basal Metabolism/Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) (The energy to run your Body Systems) + Energy required for Digestion + Energy Required for Physical Activity

WEIGHT GAIN EXAMPLE... Female, Age 30, Height 170cm, Weight 80 Kg Activity Level – Light Daily Caloric Expenditure – 2200 calories If dietary intake was 2700 calories/day (+500) you would add approximately 1Kg of fat every 2 weeks 500 calories of food

WEIGHT LOSS EXAMPLE... Female, Age 30, Height 170cm, Weight 80 Kg Activity Level – Light Daily Caloric Expenditure – 2200 calories If dietary intake was only 1800 calories/day (-400) you would lose 1kg of fat every 17 days 400 Calories equals a couple of glasses of vino

BUT IS WEIGHT LOSS REALLY THAT SIMPLE? Simple – yes. Easy – no. If it was that simple every weight loss attempt would be successful – yet 98% of weight loss attempts fail! Most of us would be our ideal weight – yet 70% of Australians are overweight or obese. Heart disease, stroke and diabetes would be on the decline – yet they are a growing and epidemic modern health crisis.

SO LETS REVIEW OTHER COMMON ISSUES THAT LEAD TO WEIGHT GAIN AND OBESITY We will be referring to the Biopsychosocial model of Obesity ‘Bio’ – relating to human biology ‘Psycho’ – relating to human thinking and cognition ‘Social’ – relating to how we interact with others
