24 CHAPTER REVIEW P. 252-253 People & Places  Pedro Menendez de Aviles and his fleet chased the French out of Florida.  Junipero Serra founded the first Spanish missions in California.  Jacques Marquette was the first French explorer to map the Mississippi River.  George Washington and the British army could not capture France’s Fort Duquesne in the French and Indian War.  The French lost a key battle to the British in Quebec. Facts & Main Ideas  Spain founded the colony of St. Augustine.  New Orleans is located at the mouth of the Mississippi River creating a good location for trading.  The Iroquois believed that the British and French were fighting over land that belonged to the Iroquois, and therefore the outcome of the war might hurt the Iroquois.  The French and Indian War lasted about 9 years.  Spain wanted to make sure that France and England were not able to begin colonizing that part of North America.  La Salle claimed the Mississippi River tributaries and surrounding area as French territory.  Britain took over most of New France, and Spain took over some French lands west of the Mississippi. Some Native American lands came under British control, and settlers were eager to move on the new land.
