PSHE Dec 2015

to have a clear understanding and be able to explain what British values are and what they mean to you. to analyse and explain how certain individuals are vulnerable and can be radicalised create an advertisement campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of radicalisation and how to spot it and stop it.

Some people think that being British means drinking lots of tea, eating cucumber sandwiches and owning a specific type of bulldog. What does living in Britain mean to you?

What do you think some British Values are? British Values

Do you have any of these? If not, add them now. British Values Democracy Free speech Respect Trust Freedom Tolerance Equality

DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH? Stand up YES Sit down NO Be prepared to share reasons for your answer…

One of the main values upheld within Britain is the idea “Freedom of Speech” Each group will be given a case study on Abu Hamza al-Masri. Abu Hamza al-Masri sought asylum within the UK and benefited from the British value of freedom of speech. This caused controversy for many as they did not agree with his extremist views.

HAVING READ YOUR CASE STUDY… Would it be better to live in society where there was no Freedom of Speech (so people like Abu Hamza al-Masri couldn’t preach his extremist views…) OR… …live in a society where there IS Freedom of Speech as a human right (and people like Abu Hamza al-Masri could preach his views still?)

DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH? Stand up YES Sit down NO Be prepared to share reasons for your answer… Have things changed? If so, why?

EXTREMISM / RADICALISATION Unfortunately, there a very small minority of people who hold extreme political and religious views in all societies. You recently did some PSHE on radicalisation… can you remember what radicalisation is?

Radicalisation is a an individual or group demonstrating increasingly extreme political, social, or religious ideals and aspirations that go against and/or undermine modern-day ideas and expressions of freedom of choice.

What does this image make you think of?

Paris attacks a few weeks ago were carried out by ISIS extremists who claim to be Muslims but are not representative of the Islamic faith. The people who carried out the atrocity would have been radicalised into thinking what they were doing was right…

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” (Nelson Mandela) Do you know any other extremist groups that have existed in the past or today?

Nazism KKK (Ku Klux Klan) Britain First ISIS

In your last PSHE you looked at ways of stopping vulnerable individuals from being radicalised. Nelson Mandela suggested, that ‘nobody is born with hatred’ How do such groups influence and eventually radicalise people? Next we will look at 2 different people and decide whether they are at risk from being radicalised…

RabiyaZayn 18 year old Muslim studentBullied by students in the past Become more devout and wears a HijabIsolated and few friends Spends free time reading the Qur'anTold teacher he wants to travel to Syria Who do you think is most at risk of being radicalised? – WHY?....

It is important to identify and try to stop radicalisation in Britain. However, it is extremely important not to stereotype one religious or ethnic group to hold extremist or radical ideas. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34785357

Who is vulnerable to becoming radicalised? Why would some people become radicalised?

TASK… Create an ad campaign to be televised on prime time Saturday night TV that highlights the dangers of being radicalised. You must include: Who is vulnerable to becoming radicalised? Why people may become radicalised? How you could stop it from happening? Either you can; write a script, or you can create a short play

Back in June an extremist gunman attacked holiday makers in Tunisia – Muslim Tunisian Hotel staff formed a human shield to protect the tourists – they shouted to the terrorist “You must kill us first”

Muslim groups around the world have strongly condemned (they completely disagree with) the deadly terror attacks Friday in Paris that left at least 127 people dead.

to have a clear understanding and be able to explain what British values are and what they mean to you. to analyse and explain how certain individuals are vulnerable and can be radicalised create an advertisement campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of radicalisation and how to spot it and stop it.

Dear God, We thank you that we live in this country and that it has British values of freedom, democracy, tolerance and equality. We thank you that we are not persecuted for our faith, whatever that might be, and that we live at peace. We pray for those who are suffering under extremist laws and we pray that their suffering would end and that they would be free, as we are. Amen.
