8 Use RACR to check progress to degree Your program MAY require more than 120 credit hours to complete all requirements. Your program MAY require fewer than 120 credit hours; unrestricted electives may be needed to reach 120 credit hours. Check GPA; advisees may need to retake courses to meet GPA requirements. Ask if advisee is succeeding in all current courses; MAP-Works includes Midterm grades, Referrals, Academic Updates, which may indicate problems.

9 RACR and Transfer Courses Transfer courses with prefixes TRN, CLL, SCL, HLP, MLL, SOS, ESC, GAC, GED are courses that do not have an established Murray State equivalent. See Transfer Equivalency Course Look-Up for courses already evaluated.Transfer Equivalency Course Look-Up These courses may appear in “Unrestricted Electives – Additional Hours Toward Degree” at bottom of RACR (after area/major/minor, before “Insufficient and Withdrawals”) Evaluate these courses for equivalency

10 Transfer Course Equivalencies If course is equivalent, contact the Transfer CenterTransfer Center (course will be evaluated and added to equivalency for ALL FUTURE evaluations) If course should be substituted for University Studies for THIS STUDENT ONLY, use the University Studies Course Substitution form University Studies Course Substitution If the course should be substituted for a course in your program, use the Registrar Course Exception formCourse Exception

11 Transfer-In Level Remains! Note: if a 200-level course from another institution is substituted for a 300+ course at MSU, the course will NOT count toward 300+ credit hours for graduation.

13 Before Meeting Advisee: Schedule of Classes Schedule of Classes: check for availability of classes for students in your program Schedule can be found on – myGate Teaching/Advising – myGate Academics (student) – RacerNet

14 Advising Session Meet with every student Use RACR and the Bulletin to help student choose classes Know prerequisites and help students plan accordingly – create/use Plan Make sure student is making progress Discuss strengths, weaknesses, successes, challenges (Mapworks can help here) Discuss career/professional plans Discuss internship/education abroad/away

15 Advanced Scheduling April 5-8 – Timetable linked on Advising website Student Registration Status: myGate/Academics, center of page – Date/Time that Advanced Scheduling opens – Holds – Academic Standing/Status First Summer O sessions are April 22-23 Students should register BEFORE Summer O!

16 15 credit hours per semester toward Area, Major/Minor, University Studies = 120 hours in 8 semester = Graduation in 4 years Note new tuition model (12-15 flat rate full-time tuition) and adjust advising accordingly

17 Full-Time Status Bursar: Full-Time = 12 credit hours NON-WEB Housing: Full-Time = average 12 hours per semester, Fall / Winter / Spring Scholarship: rules vary; be sure that student knows how to stay in good standing International: rules vary; be sure that student knows requirements Veterans: Full-Time = 12 credit hours; no WEB remedial/developmental allowed

18 Refer Advisees to the Experts! Be an expert in Academic Advising for your area, major, programs, certifications, etc. When the topic is outside of the above expertise – housing, mental health, scholarships, loans, etc. – use Academic Advising Quick Links to refer advisee to the appropriate expert When in doubt, use Referral to Retention Advising website has Counseling info link Advising website

19 Advisor Hold After successful advising, clear Advisor Hold myGate, Teaching/Advising, Advisee Listing (or use Student Search) Click HERE Released looks like this: If you do not see Release Advisor Hold for your advisee, contact the RegistrarRegistrar If you accidentally clear a hold that should not be cleared, contact the Registrar to reset it

20 Declaring Area, Major, Minor 45 Credit Hours: Student MUST have Area or Major declared before Advanced Scheduling 60 Credit Hours: Student with a Major MUST have MINOR or second Major declared before Advanced Scheduling Change of Area/Major: use this FORM (Registrar Forms)FORMRegistrar Forms Change of Minor may be done on same form; student MAY change Minor without advisor signature at the Registrar’s Office

21 Advising Honors College Students Honors Sequence REPLACES University Studies See RACR for Honors Sequence Honors Students MUST enroll in AT LEAST ONE Honors Sequence course EVERY semester until Honors Sequence is complete Honors Program students register on the first day of Advanced Scheduling Be proactive in helping Honors students match Honors Sequence courses and prerequisites If Honors Sequence disappears from an Honors Program student’s RACR, the student should contact the Honors Office immediately.
