A traditionnal marriage in the south-west of France in the late 1930s: -This is the picture of a traditionnal marriage in the south-west of France in the 1950s/60s. The gender linked stereotypes are clearly visible: -The couples are standing in order, the man on the left, the woman on the right. The bride is with her family on the right, the bridegroom is with his on the left. -The grandparents, who are very respected, are sitting on the first ground. The patriarch is easy to recognise with his big moustache, in the authoritative attitude of the family master. -Some women on the right are wearing a cooking apron: they have probably been preparing the wedding banquet. -The presence of young children reminds of the role of a woman: to get married and create a household.

An Alsacian family (north-east of France) in the country in 1917: -For a long time the education of children has been dealt with by women. Fathers hardly show any feelings to their children.

-Later, fathers look more caring, even though it’s still the mother’s job to hold the babies.

A couple during world war 1 -Soldiers going to the war or on leave have caused many marriages, or at least many pictures of couples. The martial attitude of the soldier reminds that the war is men’s business.

A manless family after World War 1 -All the French families have lost at least a father, son or brother killed during the war. Many children, who had lost their father had to be brought up without a male reference. Therefore many women have become the head of the family.

The perfect household, early 1950s The uniform of the soldier/hero, the Clark Gable style moustache, the sitting but heightened position at the back: everything shows the superior, comforting and protecting attitude of the chief of the family who exposes his profession and his professionnal status. On the contrary, the woman seems to be dedicated to the education of children.

The nursery school, post-war baby boom (1946-1950) -Classes are mixed in nursery school, but the gender differences already show through clothes. Boys and girls are apart on the picture.

Primary intermediate class at the Jeanne d’Arc school in Pessac, 1944-1945 -Boys and girls were not in the same classes. The presence of a doll on the picture must have seemed natural at that time, in a girls class, this way they were prepared to become mothers

In a boys class at the school Aristide Briand in Pessac, 1971-1972 A girls class, in the mid 1970s - Society allows boys to be naughty and undisciplined. But girls must appear studious and serious.

A household school in France -In this school, girls the learn the domestic activities like sewing or cooking.

A girls class in Pessac, Bellegrave, in 1962-1964 Girls will have to wear the uniform (the apron) longer than the boys...

A training school -Technical studies were only for boys.

The celebrations at the Aristide Briand school in Pessac in the 1950s. The majorettes (Pom Pom girls…) The firemen Who could have imagined at that time a firewoman or a pompom boy?

The « rosière » in Pessac in 1938 The « rosière » is a village maid publicly rewarded for her chastity. She is a model for the other young girls. This way they are taught to behave before getting married…

Football team « les Madures » in Pessac in 1910 Rugby team « l’Etoile sportive pessacaise» around 1935 For quite a long time, sports have been men’s business
