2 Phuket, ThailandJan. 26, 2002 APAN Retreat Meeting Solicitation of Post-HPIIS HPIIS project will be completed in the fall of 2003, together with Star Tap project. Both projects are expected to be renewed without any discontinuation, and the new solicitation is expected to be announced in this fall. The delay of NSF’s internal processing might extend the current projects for some months, ex. 12 months.

6 Phuket, ThailandJan. 26, 2002 APAN Retreat Meeting 。 Cross Connections the cross-connects for inter-domain networks requires the standards for lambda interoperability: - Modulation e.g. RZ, NRZ - FEC - Gain tilt and power level - Bandwidth - OC48, OC192, OC768 - PMD and dispersion management These standards should be established for higher bandwidth such as at 40 Gb/s. But inter-domain connection will be at electrical level for the foreseeable future.

The projects for the globe are also expected. –scalability, environments, health, security, big science, etc. Editor group should be formed.

Yes! –NGO : better collaboration, bu t less fund –GOV : more fund, but political interruption
