Homework: Finish Egyptian Imperialism Caption DUE TODAY, Submit permission slip for Stanford study!!

2 Congo and Egypt Congo Who Imperialized: Belgians Why (motive): Economic reasons, wanted resources for profit, rubber and ivory, political: first to colonize, could bring national greatness ideological: social darwinism = felt they were superior How natives were treated: hands/arms were cut off, treated very badly, punishment for not enough rubber but also trophy like if they were animals How natives reacted: Congolese run from ALL foreigners, scared of getting killed Egypt Who Imperialized:Britain Why (motive): Geopolitics land was valuable, connected two seas and could help with trade, Suez Canal = economic motive, bring European culture = ideological How natives were treated: not as bad, but got into fights, British took their wealth and the Egyptians became poor, treated like “slaves” How natives reacted: Egyptians start rioting, big riot with weapons, injured a lot of europeans, ended up burning down the city, maybe a revolution tried to completely change government

3 Egypt and Congo Similarities They were both imperialized by Europeans Both were imperialized for economic reasons: trying to make profit Natives had no say Both European countries planned on “changing” the people  ideological bringing western civilization A lot of people were killed Differences Belgians were much more brutal by cutting off hands Egyptians fought back, Congolese were afraid Egyptians started as a stronger nation

11 Opium War Debrief Knowing that Great Britain did fight the first Opium War against China, why do you think Parliament found Macaulay’s speech more convincing than Gladstone’s? Do you think there were any other factors or motives at play that led Britain to go to war with China? What might those be? In his speech, William Gladstone called the Opium War one of the most unjust wars ever fought? Do you agree?
