4 New Material Why did the Egyptian Empire become weakened? Like many other empires (this is what we will look at next, the rise & fall of various empires), the larger they became the greater the challenges it faced. Such as: Rivalry for power especially the throne. Weak rulers (problem related to above) Invasion especially with the introduction of new weapons such as the chariot.

7 New Material The first rulers of Egypt were not even from Egypt, they were from Asiatic were called Hyksos. They were hated by the people of Egypt. The Hyksos invited the descendants of Abraham to settle in Egypt. Eventually the Hyksos were forced to leave and the Hebrews were then enslaved.

8 New Material After the overthrow of the Hyksos, kings aka Pharaohs began to build a new Egypt. One advantage the Pharaohs had was weaponry. Bronze spears & swords, chariots, archers and organized infantry. Many of these Pharaohs built the empire through war. Hatshepsut – one of the first of the new rulers of the “New Kingdom” Her rule was built on trade.

9 Hatshepsut She took the throne because her step son was too young to rule. She realized wars are costly in terms of men and resources. She encouraged trade to build wealth. Her step-son, Thutmose re-claimed the throne, it is believed by murdering her. His approach was very different. He returned to a war approach. Securing portions of Africa (known as Nubia), Palestine and Syria

10 Thutmose Egypt was about to reach its peak as an empire. As the Egyptians moved into Syria & Palestine they began to get too close to the Hittites Empire. The Hittites moved initially in from Asia Minor. Where is Asia Minor?
