California added as a free state and New Mexico Territory possibly going free state as well. Cuba

4 Ch. 18 Why was trade with Japan so important to the U.S.? More trade equals more goods to use for convenience and comfort, more raw materials to use in manufacturing, and another market to buy U.S. goods. Who and in what year forced Japan to open their country to U.S. trade? Commodore Mathew Perry in 1854

5 Ch. 18 Why did Southerners feel like THEY needed a rail route from middle USA to the west coast in the South? To win the economic competition with the North, for a RR brings them business and power. What was purchased to help make it possible to build a railroad from Texas to California in the South? Gadsden Purchase, 1853

6 Ch. 18 To what extent, if any, were conditions for women in the U.S. similar to the conditions for African Americans before 1860? Considered unequal to white males, could not vote, could not work in certain occupations, had no control in society, were subjected to white male leadership Sectional disagreements after 1848 became more difficult to compromise due to economic differences rather than differences over the morality of slavery. Support, modify, or refute this statement. Modify – political differences became big as both sides were worried about an imbalance in the Senate. The moral issue was becoming more and more of an issue as abolitionists were becoming more aggressive and effective with literature such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Social irritants were becoming more prevalent such as the Fugitive Slave Laws and Bleeding Kansas.
