3 The Council of Clermont Took place November 18- 28, 1095 AD Attended by 300 Church officials.

4 Subjects Urban Discussed Byzantine Emperor Alexius asks for military help against the Seljuk Turks who were about to invade Constantinople. Priestly marriage. Excommunicating King Phillip I of France.

5 The Speech at Clermont Held in a large square outside Clermont’s eastern gate on November 27, 1095 AD. Thousands of people came to listen. This is the speech that ignited a holy war that lasted almost 200 years!

6 Goal for today: To find out the reasons why Pope Urban wanted a Crusade.

7 Pope Urban’s Possible Goals To drive the Seljuk Turks out of Byzantine Empire. To heal the schism between Eastern and Western Churches. To “free” Jerusalem from the Muslims and Jews. To stop the endless fighting in Europe between Lords by sending their knights away to fight for a common cause.
