Factors effecting development Genetic factors Biological influences before birth Environmental influences Socio-economic factors Lifestyle

Genetic factors Each living cell in the human body contains a nucleus with 23 pairs of chromosomes (one from mother, one from father) Each chromosome carries units of inheritance (genes) Genes are made up of DNA DNA- contains instructions for producing proteins Proteins- regulate human development

Genetic disorders Sometimes babies can be born with genetic conditions Usually tested for before or just after birth We can’t change nature (genes) but we can alter the environment (nurture) to ensure that an individual leads a healthier life Nature will always interact with nurture

Task In small groups research one genetic factor Produce Power Point/ poster Present back to class today Cystic Fibrosis Coeliac Disease Asthma Brittle Bone Disease Rheumatic disease Phenylketonuria

Biological influences on development

Biological influences The environment inside the womb can have an influence on a child's development. Drinking Smoking Infection Diet

Foetal alcohol syndrome Mothers who drink large amounts during pregnancy may have a baby affected by this Hearing and ear problems Mouth, teeth and facial problems Weak immune system Epilepsy Liver damage Kidney and heart defects Cerebral palsy and other muscular problems Height and weight issues Hormonal disorders.

When the mother drinks, alcohol crosses into the placenta The baby's liver isn't fully formed so cannot metabolise the alcohol quickly enough Most likely to happen in first 3 months as the face develops in weeks 6-9

Infections in pregnancy There are certain infections that a mother can get during pregnancy which can attack the foetus Rubella (measles) is very dangerous if caught during first month of pregnancy- blindness, deafness and heart defects Cytomegalovirus (herpes) can cause blindness, deafness and learning difficulties Infections During Pregnancy: TOXOPLASMOSIS, THRUSH, UTIs &STDs Infections During Pregnancy: TOXOPLASMOSIS, THRUSH, UTIs &STDs

Diet Everything that a mother eats will effect the foetus. High sugar/fat diets can lead to an increase in cholesterol and heart disease for children later on in life.
