1 The New South and Old West [1865-1890] Kyle, Josh, Chase

2 Amendments 13th officially abolished and continues to prohibit slavery, and with limited exceptions, such as those convicted of a crime, prohibits involuntary servitude. 15th 15 Amendment provides that governments in the United States may not prevent a citizen from voting based on that citizen's race, color, or previous condition of servitude. It was ratified on February 3, 1870. 14th The 14th amendment includes the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses among others. It is perhaps the most significant structural change to the Constitution since the passage of the United States Bill of Rights. The amendment provides a broad definition of United States citizenship, overturning the Dred Scott case, which excluded African Americans. It requires the states to provide equal protection under the law to all persons (not only to citizens) within their jurisdiction.

6 Racism in the South Racism was enacted in southern society on two tangents: 1.Through terrorism and discrimination enacted by the people. 2.Through the use of legislation to racially discriminate.

7 Jim Crow on the Scene The "new south" is unique in the sense that the racial discrimination that occurred did so by circumventing government legislation.

8 The Old West Racism was also clearly present in the western reaches of America during this time. The creation of the Chinese Exclusion Act (1886) further depicts racist viewpoints of Americans.

10 A railroad line built in the United States of America between 1863 and 1869. The transcontinental railroad is considered one of the greatest American technological feats of the 19th century. Completion of the railroad substantially accelerated populating the West, while contributing to the decline of territory controlled by the Native Americans.

12 The Death of Plains Indians Ways Dawes Severalty Act - This gov't redistribution of native american land to further settlement of non-indians and the development of railroads. Sioux Wars: also know as the Black Hills War, the Sioux War contained several parts. Dakota War of 1862 Colorado War of 1863 Bozeman War of 1866 Pine Ridge Campaign The "old West" contributed to the continual extinction of native peoples and was similar to other American eras such as events surrounding the presidency of President Jackson.

14 Relation To other eras "Reconstruction"- depicts the society and life that had developed from the events of reconstruction. Shows the direct repercussions. "Civil Rights"- The racial discrimination that could have been eliminated in this era led to a deep scar that wouldn't heal until the 1960's. "Westward Expansion"- The continuation of America's growth relates to all eras in American history previous to 1865. "Technological Advancement": Expansion of technology is similar to other eras in how the new advancements further develop the time period.
