1 Army Aviation in MOUT

2 Terminal Learning Objective
While Serving As a Senior Warrant Officer in an Aviation Unit, the Student Will Apply the Fundamentals of Military Operations on Urban Terrain (MOUT) IAW FM 1-100, FM 1-111, FM 90-10, and FM

3 Military Operations on Urban Terrain (MOUT):
MOUT Definition Military Operations on Urban Terrain (MOUT): include all military actions that are planned and conducted on terrain where manmade construction impacts the tactical options available to the commander.

4 Difficulties Associated with Urban Combat
Commercial and industrial complexes continue to spread across the ground where forces must maneuver. Growing villages and towns straddle lines of communication. Opportunities for wide sweeps around built-up areas are decreasing rapidly. The distribution of smaller built-up areas within the urban complex make isolation by encirclement more difficult. These manmade elements of urban sprawl must by viewed as terrain and as obstacles to maneuver.

5 Perspectives of MOUT Urbanized battlefield must be viewed from two perspectives Brigade and higher commanders must focus on the elements of urban sprawl Maneuver battalion commanders and subordinates must focus on the piece of terrain that directly influences the nature of combat to be waged

6 Challenges of Urban Combat Operations
Constrains Technological Advances Impacts the Battle Tempo Forces Units to Fight in Small, Decentralized Elements Creates Difficult Moral Dilemmas Commanders Must Enforce Strict Discipline

7 MOUT Operations US & Russian Doctrine
Avoid Urban Combat Operations Unless Required Major Urban Areas Represent the Power and Wealth of the Country Psychological Advantages Major Avenues of Approach and Lines of Communication Isolate and Bypass

8 Categories of Built-Up Areas

9 Aviation Brigade Missions MOUT Environment
Aerial Fire Support Lift for Assault Operations Relocation of Combat or Combat Support Units Resupply Operations Observation and Intelligence Operations Operations of Sensory Devices Retransmission Operations

10 Vulnerabilities of Aviation MOUT Environment
Exposure to Direct Fire Obstacles Limited PZ/LZ Availability Limited Fixed-Wing CAS Requirement for Escort and Direct/Indirect Suppressive Fire Degraded Communications Degraded Weapon Utilization Navigation Weather Effects

11 Deliberate Attack Phases
Isolation of the Built-Up Area Assault to Gain a Foothold Fixing the Defense Conducting the Assault Clearance of the Area

12 Deliberate Attack Isolation Phase
Cavalry Squadron Observation and Screening Probing Attacks, Intelligence Updates Attack Battalion Suppressive Fire Secure Assaulted Areas Engage Advancing, Retreating, or Resupply Forces Assault Battalion Air Assaults to Flank and Rear Area Sling/Carry ATGMs, Mortars, and Light Artillery

13 Deliberate Attack Assault Phase
Cavalry Squadron Observation and Intelligence Secure Assaulting Force From Counterattacks Attack Battalion Suppressive and Directed Fires Air Assault Security Attack Enemy Armor and Hard Targets Assault Battalion Air Assault Missions to Adjacent Areas Resupply, Command & Control

14 Deliberate Attack Clearance Phase
Cavalry Squadron Observation and Isolation Protect Flanks and Rear Areas Attack Battalion Limited Suppressive Fire Prevent Reinforcement Work Targets From Cavalry Assault Battalion Limited Air Assaults Isolated Targets Resupply, CS, CSS, Command & Control

15 Hasty Attack MOUT Environment
Find a Weak Point Primarily Cavalry Mission Fix Forward Enemy Elements Cav - Observation, Reconnaissance, & Light Attack Attack - Direct/Suppressive Fire & Anti-Armor Assault - FARP, Resupply, CS, CSS, C3 Move Through or Around Cav - Screening & Security Attack - Very Limited Role, Clean-up Only Assault - FARP, Reinforcement, Resupply, CS, CSS, C3
