2. Welcome and Introduction About me: I am from Chesterfield, South Carolina where I graduated from Chesterfield High School. I continued my education at Northeastern Tech in Cheraw, Midlands Tech in Columbia, and finally the University of South Carolina for my Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts (History) and my Master’s Degree in Education. I am happy to be here with you at Marlboro County High School and I look forward to a great year! Go Bulldogs! Now, let’s hear a little bit about you! State you name, where you’re from, and what your favorite hobbies are!

3. Civics? Law Ed? These classes will be centered on American law and the constitution. We will cover topics like: The Supreme Court Congress Civic Duties Civil Rights The Constitution

4. Films These classes will also have films. Each film will have guided questions to go with the movie as well as a TEST after the movie is finished. Some films you might see are: Glory Gideon’s Trumpet 12 Angry Men A More Perfect Union Blood Diamond

5. Grading Scale A= 93-100 B = 85-92 C = 77-84 D = 70-76 F = 0-69

6. Materials For this class, you will need a 3-ring binder and a folder. In the 3-ring binder you will put notes and do classwork in. In the folder, you will keep up with returned work and any other documentation. Pencil/pens Paper Dividers Colored Pencils/Markers MATERIALS SHOULD ALWAYS BE BROUGHT TO CLASS. FAILURE TO DO SO ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS WILL RESULT IN A REFERRAL FOR BEING REPEATEDLY UNPREPARED.

7. Make-Up Work State law requires that students have only TEN unexcused absences per year. It is your responsibility to provide documentation of excused absences to attendance. You risk losing credit for the course upon too many absences. Students should check with me or check the make-up work folder for their class if they miss days. You have 5 days to make up your work and get full credit (100%). After five days, points will be lost. I WILL NOT ASK FOR MAKE-UP WORK, IT’S UP TO YOU!!!

8. Tests/Quizzes We will have POP QUIZZES on any day, on material that we covered the previous day. Tests will be made up of matching, multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions. Quiz and test items can be taken from lectures, discussions, readings, homework, and class work.

9. Due Dates Due dates are given on the day the work is assigned. The due date is the last day you can turn something in and get full credit. All assignments turned in late will have 20% cut off the top immediately. Turn your work in on time!!!

10. Grade Weight 35% Tests 30% Class Work 30% Quizzes and Projects 5% Homework

11. Cheating Cheating is a serious offense. When cheating is discovered, a zero will be given for the assignment. Examples of cheating include, but are not limited to: Copying homework or tests Using notes or other aids during a test or quiz Asking for help on tests or quizzes Claiming someone else’s work as your own.

12. Rules FOLLOW ALL SCHOOL RULES!!! I have only a few rules in this class, and they must be followed! 1. Do not interrupt the teacher. 2. Do not interrupt anyone who has the floor. 3. Be prepared each day. 4. Conduct yourself like a respectful adult.

13. Negative Consequences Failure to follow rules and/or instruction from the teacher can result in negative consequences for you. They are: 1. After School Detention (ASD) 2. Referral and/or Call Home to Parent 3. Schedule Conference with Parent/Teacher/Assistant Principal

14. Rewards Good behavior is rewarded! The best behaved class for an entire unit (or about 2-3 weeks) will be rewarded a “free day” in which class can be held outside in the courtyard or a movie relating to our subject will be watched in class. Individuals can be rewarded by getting homework passes for good behavior, grades, etc.

15. Bathroom Policy Each student will be given 4 bathroom passes each nine weeks. This gives you 4 times to go to the bathroom. You should only be going for emergencies. If you use up your 4 passes during a nine weeks and have to go a fifth time: You will take an ASD. (An ASD is worth being able to handle your emergency if it is a genuine emergency). If passes aren’t used in a 9 weeks: They can roll over to the next 9 weeks or be turned in for extra points or homework passes. The bathroom is closed for the first 20 minutes and the last 20 minutes of class.

16. Procedures Do not get out of your seat for any reason while the teacher is addressing the class. Wait until the teacher is finished speaking to ask questions about the restroom or anything unrelated to the discussion. If you have to go to the restroom, raise up your hand with 2 fingers. If I give you a thumbs up, you can fill out your restroom pass and bring it to me to initial. If you have to sharpen your pencil, raise up your hand with 3 fingers. If I give you a thumbs up, go sharpen your pencil. If I do not give a thumbs up, I will hold up 1 finger, meaning “wait.” Wait until I am finished speaking or demonstrating, then ask again. To ask a question about class, just raise your hand up with 1 finger or all fingers. Trash should be kept at your desk until class is over.

18. Tardy/Absense Policy If you are out of your seat when the bell rings, you are tardy and will be recorded as such. You have 6 minutes between classes. Use this time to go to the restroom and anything else you have to do before class. THIS IS PLENTY OF TIME TO GET HERE AND GET IN YOUR SEAT!!! Too many tardies (5) results in a referral. Passes from anyone must be signed.
