Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming The National Palace Museum in Taipei has a permanent collection of over 677,687 pieces of ancient Chinese artifacts and artworks, This is one of the largest collections in the world. The collection encompasses over 8,000 years of Chinese history from the Neolithic age to the late Qing Dynasty. Most of the collection is made up of high quality pieces collected by China's ancient emperors. In 2009, it was the 11th most visited art museum in the world.

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming The palace museum was established in 1924 in Beijing. After the establishment of the Republic, the dethroned emperor Pu-yi was permitted to stay in the Palace. The Government granted an annual allowance to maintain Pu-yi’s court and staff. For the most part, the bureaucrats of the last dynasty, including the eunuchs, were satisfied with the life style provided by the new government.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Emperors ruled from the Palace. Ministers reported to the Emperor every day. For important events, the ministers would report to the Emporer in the Bao-he or Zhong-he courts. No seats were provided.

It was rumored that the treasures of the palace were stolen and sold to private collectors or foreign buyers. Thus, in 1924, the government forced Pu-yi to move out of the Palace. They then registered all the treasures in the Palace. The National Palace Museum was established on the location. In 1925, the Palace museum was opened to the public, until the collection was moved to Si-chuan to escape the Japanese invasion.

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming 1931, the Japanese army attacked Sheng-yang, and the whole of Manchuria soon fell under Japanese control. The Chinese government realized that the Japanese troops would soon move southwards and that Beijing was not safe. The Palace museum started a project to catalogue the treasures; the best of the pieces were to be moved to a safe place.

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming In 1934, the Japanese entered the great wall, and the evacuation plan began. Nearly twenty thousand crates of museum pieces were shipped to Shang-hai. When a new museum was built in Nan-jing in 1936, the treasures were moved again to Nan-jing.

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming With the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war in 1937, Nan-jing was exposed to the Japanese invasion. The museum was forced to move again, this time to the interior of China. The treasures were transported by ships, trains or trucks. Through different routes, they arrived Si-chuan.

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming The treasures were exhibited around the world, for example in Russia and the United Kingdom. After the end of the Sino-Japanese War, the treasures were prepared to move back to Nanjing. However, civil war broke out once more. Chiang Kai-shek was defeated by the Communist Party and decided to move to Taiwan. The treasures were also shipped to Taiwan. WIKI w:User:pfctdayelise

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming 1948, the shipment arrived in Keelung along with other archives and materials. The second and the third shipments arrived the following year, all together three thousand crates. They were originally stored in Wu-feng, Taizhong City. 1957, the museum established a display room, and some treasures were open to the public again. Some pieces were also displayed in the United States in the year 1961.

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming The collection was moved to Taipei in 1965.

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming The government realized that the condition in Taizhong was not ideal for the treasures. A project to build a new museum took place in the early 1960s. In 1965, the new museum, located in Wai-shuang-xi, was finished. The new building was in the shape of the traditional Chinese palace architecture.

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming Initially, the museum had a small capacity, 16 display rooms and 8 galleries. Soon the administration of the museum realized that an expansion was necessary. In 1968 and 1971, extensions were carried out. This attracted more and more visitors.

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming Bronze was treasured by the ancient rulers. Some of the bronze pieces have inscriptions on them. Most of the inscriptions were the holders names or good wishes for their offspring. On some pieces, long inscriptions can be found. These inscriptions sometimes were declarations from the rulers at the time. They therefore provide scholars with a good insight about the ruler and his policies.

A painting by Zhang Zeduan (1085–1145) of Sung-Dynasty. It depicts the daily life of Bianjing( 汴京 ), then the capital, today‘s Kaifeng( 開封 ). During the early spring, Chinese celebrate the Qingming Festival( 清 明 ) by commemorating their dead relatives at their graves. Zhang presented the details of daily life of the people in the capital city. The hand scroll is often considered to be the most renowned work among all Chinese paintings. It was kept in the Imperial court, enjoyed by Qian-long especially.

Wang Xizhi ( 王羲之,303–361) was one of the most famous calligraphers, if not the most. He was born to the Wang Family of the Jin Dynasty (265–420), one of the respectable families of his time. He served as a Military officer, therefore reffered as You-jun General. His works were treasured by many emperors, who even took his art to the grave as funerary objects. The existing works are imitations of famous calligraphers of different periods.

He came to China in 1715 as a missionary but his artistic skills won him an important position in the Qing-court. He spent a number of years painting various subjects. He used the western technique to present Chinese ideas with great success. He is know in China as Lang Shining ( 郎世寧 ). His paintings were treasured by the emperors and ministers.

Qianlong(1711-1799) witnessed one of the most affluent times in Chinese history. He was interested in sciences and fine arts. He ordered artisans to produce numerous works, jade sculptures, paintings, bronzes and porcelain. He also left a great amount of poems. He also ruined a lot of master pieces by stamping and writing on top of them.

Chengchi University Chou, Whei-ming Some of the less valuable pieces are nonetheless very popular amongst tourists. The Jade cabbage and the meat- shaped stone are the best examples. Both are favorites of tourists from China, Japan and Korea.
