2 Context United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest trusts in the UK We provide services from 3 main acute hospitals in Lincolnshire Lincoln County Hospital Pilgrim Hospital, Boston Grantham and District Hospital Outpatient, day case and inpatient services from a range of other community hospitals operated by Lincolnshire Community Health Services or local GP clusters Louth County Hospital John Coupland Hospital (Gainsborough) Johnson Community Hospital (Spalding) Skegness and District General Hospital

3 Context In an average year, the service will support 180,000 A&E Patients 600,000 Outpatients 100,000 Inpatients Deliver over 5,000 babies 7,800 Staff Over 300 different careers

4 The Recruitment Challenge Ageing workforce Ageing population 20% increase in over 50’s by 2025 – From 549,000 to 660,000 NHS forecasting skills shortage in service areas Shortage of doctors and nurses across the UK, in addition to other specialist services Many roles require significant training periods Lack of awareness of NHS careers / young people entering the sector

5 Engagement with Education Sector Lack of awareness of NHS careers Absence of access and employment pathways for ULHT, resulting in limited awareness of the Trust and its career opportunities for young people Difficulty in engaging with ULHT due to its size and lack of central point for enquiries Fragmented approach to careers education / recruitment strategy regarding recruitment of new apprentices into the Trust

6 Engagement Strategy ULHT commitment to its own Apprenticeship programme “Grow our Own” model to talent development and retention As part of the organisational development of the Trust, ULHT is seeking to incorporate Apprenticeships into its workforce organisational structure, supporting effective recruitment through the identification and promotion of employment pathways, staff progression and development opportunities.
